Vredeveld, Offense Shine In Game Two Shutout Over Muskies

MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team split a NACC doubleheader against Lakeland on Sunday afternoon at Neumann Family Field, dropping game one 7-5 before bouncing back and winning game two 10-0 in seven innings.

THE BASICS

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Lakeland got the scoring started right away as the first three Muskies singled and then two scored on a fielder's choice to take a 2-0 lead.
  • WLC answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the first when Jake Grollo (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) singled to right field scoring Brett Jakel (Reeseville, Wis./Waterloo).
  • After LC extended its lead to 3-1 in the third, WLC took the lead with a three-run inning. KJ Banse (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) had an RBI, and Ryan Stancl (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) had a two-RBI single scoring Grollo and Curtis Engelbrecht (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Northland Lutheran).
  • The Muskies answered to tie the game at 4-4 after four innings.
  • LC scored a run in the sixth and two in the seventh to take a 7-4 lead.
  • The Warriors cut the lead to 7-5 after an RBI single from Engelbrecht in the seventh.
  • WLC had the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth but could not capitalize, dropping the game 7-5.
  • Kyle Baron (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) allowed four runs, one earned, in 5.0 innings of work on four hits. 
  • The Warriors had 11 hits in the contest, led by three from Josiah Boucher (Menasha, Wis./Menasha), but three errors on defense proved costly for the Warriors.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Warriors bounced back in game two, winning 10-0 in seven innings in a game that lasted only 1:17. 
  • WLC's bats came out swinging as it scored three runs in the opening inning. Grollo had an RBI line drive to right field plating Jakel. Sid Lehman (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) then doubled to the left center field gap, scoring Grollo and Banse.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran broke the game open in the fourth as nine straight Warriors reached base with two outs to score seven runs.
  • Jake Schwall (West Allis, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) singled to right to plate Boucher and Joe Hanson (La Crosse, Wis./Logan).
  • Banse singled to right scoring Schwall and Jakel.
  • Grollo had a bunt single on which Banse and Engelbrecht scored on a throwing error.
  • Matt Wick (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) had an infield single scoring Grollo to complete the two-out Warriors rally.
  • Brock Vredeveld (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) cruised to a complete-game shutout, allowing only four hits and striking out four.

FOR THE FOES

  • The Muskies collected 11 hits in game one, led by Jody Harrison's four.
  • Connor Hilburn improved his record to 1-2 on the season, throwing 8.0 innings and allowing 10 hits and five runs, four of which were earned. Luke Kelly record his third save of the season.
  • Four different LC batters recorded a hit in game two.
  • Jeremy Surowiec suffered the loss, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing 10 runs on 14 hits.

UP NEXT

  • Wisconsin Lutheran hosts Ripon (8-19) on Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference game at Neumann Family Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. The Red Hawks are coming off a 12-11 11-inning victory against Carroll on Sunday.
