Zuleger's Career High Leads To Win Over Dominican

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – Behind a career-high 19 points off the bench from sophomore Zach Zuleger (West Bend, Wis.) and a double-double from senior Andrew Bruggink (Brookfield, Wis.), the Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball team earned an 85-69 win over visiting Dominican Saturday afternoon inside the Recreation Complex.

  • The Stars scored on their first two possessions of the game to take an early 5-0 lead. WLC used a trio of free throw makes to get back within two before Dominican scored the next nine points via three pointers for a 14-3 lead.
  • Coming out of a timeout, the Warriors went on a 12-0 run to take a one-point advantage at 15-14. Sophomore Drew Bernhagen (Markesan, Wis.) knocked down a three, and Zuleger converted a pair of offensive rebounds into layups. Freshman Trevor Stiede (Pulaski, Wis.) capped the stretch with a three from the corner which gave the Warriors their first lead.
  • Neither side was able to gain much of an advantage the next seven minutes, with the score knotted at 32-32 with three minutes remaining in the opening half. A layup from Zuleger and a pair of free throws by Bruggink gave the Warriors a four-point lead and senior Colin Biesterfeld (West Bend, Wis.) hit a three before half as WLC held a 39-38 lead at the break.
  • WLC scored the first 11 points of the second half, extending its lead to 52-38. Wisconsin Lutheran found success at the rim, as junior Matty Farner (Muskego, Wis.), junior Caleb Goldstein (Fond du Lac, Wis.), sophomore Alex VanCrete (Green Lake, Wis.), and senior Andrew Wojcik (Brookfield, Wis.) all completed contested layups. The Warriors used the pressure to get to the charity stripe, knocking down six free throws.
  • WLC took its largest lead at 66-43 with 10 minutes remaining in the second half on a layup by Bruggink. The Stars climbed back to within 16 with a 6-0 run before Zuleger and VanCrete used layups to push the game back to 20.
  • Zuleger added a couple more layups late in the game as the Warriors closed out an 85-69 home victory.

  • Zuleger paced the Warriors with 19 points off the bench on 9-of-11 shooting. Bruggink recorded his second consecutive double-double, finishing with 15 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
  • WLC shot 51.7 percent (31-of-60) from the floor, the third time in the last four games above the 50 percent mark.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran out-rebounded the Stars 43-29, including 12 offensive boards. WLC used the extra possessions to out-score Dominican 19-4 in second chance points.
  • The Warriors' bench finished with 40 points, doubling the total from Dominican.
  • WLC's offense found the most success close to the basket, out-scoring Dominican 52-22 on points in the paint.
  • The Green and White committed a season-low six turnovers and out-scored DU by nine (13-4) in that category.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran, which improved to 4-1 at home, has won eight of its last 10 over the Stars.

  • Nick Lavere and Tyler Guest led the Stars with 14 points each as Dominican shot 38.7 percent (24-of-62) from the floor and 36.7 percent (11-of-30) from three. The Stars were perfect from the line, finishing 10-of-10.
  • Guest's seven rebounds led the team, while Jackson Smith had a team-high four assists.
