Michaelis, Offense Dominant In Game 2 Win Over Lasers

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WLCSports.com) - The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team racked up 16 hits and 11 runs in an 11-6 victory in game two of a doubleheader against Lasell to open its 2019 season Sunday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. WLC dropped game one 5-4 on a walkoff at the Player Development Complex.

  • The Warriors put the pressure on early when they loaded the bases in the opening inning but could not scratch a run across. Lasell then pushed two runs across in the bottom half on one hit for a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
  • WLC loaded up the bases again in the third and a walk from Sid Lehman (Theresa, Wis.) cut the deficit to 2-1.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran knotted the game at 2-2 in the fourth on a double from Johnny Offenbacher (Waukesha, Wis.) to the gap in left center to plate Ryan Dominick (Bartlett, Ill.).
  • Lasell regained the lead in the fourth inning following a one-out single to right.
  • After the second scoreless inning from both teams, Brannigan Hart (Davie, Fla.) tied the game up again with a booming double to left field to score Gunner Amelunk (Wales, Wis.) in the sixth.
  • The Warriors took the lead for the first time in the seventh when Kasey Zdroik (Plainfield, Wis.) scored off a two-base dropped fly ball by the centerfielder.
  • Lasell answered in the seventh with two runs on three hits to walk off the Warriors.
  • Hart paced the Warriors with a hit and drawing three walks. Amelunk went 2-for-3 with two walks and three stolen bases.
  • Dylan Knoespel (Brillion, Wis.) allowed three runs and five hits in 6.0 innings on the mound.

  • Hart stayed hot at the plate with a double to left field to plate Dominick to open the scoring in the first inning of game two. Lehman brought in Hart with a check-swing single over the second baseman's head to give WLC a 2-0 lead after an inning.
  • Amelunk snuck a single past the third baseman and Dominick recorded an RBI before Jake Schwall (West Allis, Wis.) dropped a perfect bunt down to give WLC a 5-0 lead through two frames.
  • Lehman singled down the third base line to plate Hart in the third inning and push the Green and White's lead to 6-0.
  • Schwall roped a triple to dead center to plate Dominick and later scored on a Hart single in the fourth for an 8-0 lead.
  • Lasell recorded its first hit in the fourth inning and plated its first run in the fifth.
  • WLC plated three more runs in the sixth off RBIs from Lehman and Nick Poblocki (Bartlett, Wis.) to push the lead to 11-1.
  • The Lasers battled back to score five runs in the seventh before WLC closed out an 11-6 victory.
  • Spencer Michaelis (Wauwatosa, Wis.) earned the win allowing just one earned run and five hits in 6.0 innings. He stuck out four and did not walk a batter.
  • Hart and Lehman each recorded three hits, while Schwall and Matthew Schulenburg (Hampshire, Ill.) added two of their own.

  • Sean Doris went 2-for-3 in the opener for the Lasers. Wyatt Sihvonen earned the win by tossing the final inning in relief.
  • Brett Sherron was 3-for-4 for Lasell in game two. Zach Handzel was tagged with the loss after surrendering six runs, all earned, in 2.2 innings.

  • WLC returns to action tomorrow when they take on Skidmore (1-1) for an 8:00 a.m. CST contest at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. The Thoroughbreds split a doubleheader against Haverford Sunday morning in Fort Myers.
