Baseball Walks-Off For 4-3 Win Over Skidmore

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WLCSports.com) – Gunner Amelunk (Wales, Wis.) scored on a walk-off wild pitch with two outs to lift the Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team to a 4-3 victory over Skidmore Monday at the Player Development Complex in its third game of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

  • The Thoroughbreds threatened in the first inning, but a diving snag by Jayson Walczak-Zelem (Oak Creek, Wis.) kept SC off the board with two runners stranded.
  • After a two-out rally started by a single from Jake Schwall (West Allis, Wis.) and a walk by Brannigan Hart (Davie, Fla.), the Warriors put a run on the scoreboard in their half of the first when Schwall scored on a throwing error.
  • Skidmore knotted the game at 1-1 on a fielder's choice in the third inning.
  • Sid Lehman's (Theresa, Wis.) two-out double to the left field wall in the third scored Schwall from first base to regain the lead for WLC.
  • After three scoreless frames, the Green and White added an insurance run in the seventh on a fielding error with the infield in to plate Johnny Offenbacher (Waukesha, Wis.).
  • The Thoroughbreds threatened in the eighth inning with the bases loaded, but a diving stab by Nick Poblocki (Bartlett, Ill.) kept the Warriors' lead at 3-1.
  • Skidmore rallied with two outs in the ninth to knot the game at 3-3.
  • Amelunk opened the Warriors' half of the final frame with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. He scored two pitches later on a wild pitch to lift Wisconsin Lutheran to a thrilling 4-3 victory.
  • Schwall recorded two hits and scored two runs, while Walczak-Zelem added two hits to lead the Warriors' offense.
  • Six different Warriors pitched in the game, led by 2.1 scoreless innings from Diego Solares (Huntley, Ill.). Fabio Kamitani (Naviraí, Brazil) earned the win in 1.2 innings of work.

  • Pat Geiger led Skidmore with two hits, and Matt Chipkin scored two runs with two walks and three stolen bases. Skidmore stole nine bases in the contest.
  • Jonathan Kaiser suffered the loss, allowing one earned run in 2.0 innings of work.

  • The Warriors return to action tomorrow morning for a seven-inning doubleheader against Finlandia (1-3) at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. First pitch is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. CST at Terry Park. The Lions played a doubleheader against Lasell Monday afternoon.
