WLC Splits Series With Platteville Behind Rago's Complete Game

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – Jessie Rago (Elgin, Ill.) allowed just five hits and one unearned run in game two to lead the Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team to a non-conference series split Monday afternoon against the UW-Platteville Pioneers. The Warriors fell 1-0 in a tightly-contested opener before downing the Pioneers 6-1 behind Rago's strong outing and two RBI from Davina Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill.). WLC earned its second all-time victory over UW-Platteville with the game two win.

  • Platteville got on the board in the bottom of the first after a leadoff single, then a sacrifice bunt that moved the runner to second, followed by a base hit back up the middle to take an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Warriors threatened in the third after singles from Brea Johnson (Cumberland, Wis.) and Gracie Wilson (Deerfield, Wis.), but were unable to score and trailed 1-0 after three innings.
  • Abby Mahsem (South Milwaukee, Wis.) laced a one-out triple to right field in the fourth inning, but WLC was unable to plate the run.
  • After another scoreless frame from both teams, Megan Belongia (Ashwaubenon, Wis.) singled to the shortstop, then Mahsem singled to left center field, but the Warriors failed to plate any runs.
  • Jules Morini (Chicago, Ill.) drew a walk in the seventh, but the Pioneers were able to escape the inning without any damage, taking game one 1-0.
  • Mahsem led WLC with two hits while Johnson collected a hit and a stolen base.
  • Mahsem suffered the loss in the circle allowing just five hits and one earned run over 7.0 innings.

  • Wilson led off game two with a hit by pitch, then moved to second after a sacrifice bunt from Aerin Moberg (Wheaton, Ill.). Mahsem followed with a double to left field, scoring Wilson and giving the Warriors an early 1-0 advantage.
  • The Pioneers evened the score in the third after two base hits and an error from the Warriors, but left two runners on base to keep it tied 1-1.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran took the lead in the fourth after singles from Mahsem and Ellen Davis (Greendale, Wis.), then Davina Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill.) doubled over the center fielder's head, scoring Mahsem and Davis and giving WLC a 3-1 lead.
  • The Warriors added two more runs in the fifth when Moberg dropped down a bunt, scoring Maddie Lindemann (Watertown, Wis.), followed by a double from Morini that plated Moberg and pushing WLC's lead to 5-1.
  • Wilson drove in another run in the sixth with a single to short, scoring Rebecca Foster (Spring, Texas), who pinch-ran for Gutierrez, who had singled earlier in the inning.
  • Rago allowed just one hit over the final two innings to secure the 6-1 victory.
  • Gutierrez, Moberg, and Mahsem each collected two hits while Gutierrez drove in two runs.
  • Rago earned the win in the circle, allowing one unearned run over 7.0 innings, while striking out four.

  • Alejandra Ochoa drove in the only run of the game in the opener, while Ashton Hoeppner earned the win, allowing just five hits over 7.0 shutout innings.
  • Rachel Martin drove in the lone run for the Pioneers in game two, while Abby Burns suffered the loss, allowing five runs over 7.0 innings.

  • The Warriors return to NACC play tomorrow when they host Lakeland. The Muskies (13-13, 6-4 NACC) swept Alverno Monday night. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Neumann Family Field.
