Baseball's Comeback Highlights Saturday Split With Stars

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – After trailing by a score of 6-0, the Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team scored five runs in the eighth inning to cap off seven unanswered runs and complete a 7-6 come-from-behind victory in game one over Dominican Saturday afternoon at Neumann Family Field. The Stars salvaged a split with a 15-5 victory in the backend of the doubleheader.

  • A pair of one-out singles got the Stars on the scoreboard first with an RBI from Frankie Sessa. The Warriors threatened with two singles in the bottom half but Dominican escaped with a 1-0 lead after the opening frame.
  • DU capitalized on a two-out error to score four unearned runs in the second and push its lead to 5-0.
  • Sessa's sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, his fourth RBI of the game, extended the Stars' lead to 6-0 through four.
  • WLC cracked the scoring column on an RBI single from Sid Lehman (Theresa, Wis.) to plate Jake Schwall (West Allis, Wis.) in the sixth.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran added another solo tally in the seventh on a run-scoring single from Brannigan Hart (Davie, Fla.) to cut the deficit to 6-2.
  • The Warriors scored five runs on four hits and took advantage of a critical error to take the lead at 7-6 in the eighth. Nick Poblocki (Bartlett, Ill.), Johnny Offenbacher (Waukesha, Wis.), Jayson Walczak-Zelem (Oak Creek, Wis.), and Ryan Dominick (Bartlett, Ill.) each recorded RBIs in the frame.
  • Levi Schriefer (San Diego, Calif.) worked around a one-out hit-by-pitch in the ninth to record his second save of the season to secure the 7-6 victory.
  • Dominick, Lehman, and Joey Tilley (Muskego, Wis.) each recorded two hits in the contest. Stephen Baehman (Neenah, Wis.) earned his first collegiate win in relief for WLC, allowing no runs on just one hit in 4.0 innings of work on the mound.

  • Dominican struck early again with another RBI from Sessa in the first to take a 1-0 advantage.
  • The Stars scored three runs with two outs in the second to extend their lead to 4-0.
  • The Green and White got a run back in their half of the second with an RBI single from Poblocki to trim the deficit to 4-1.
  • The Stars loaded the bases with no outs in the third, but scored just one run to take a 5-1 lead.
  • The Warriors knotted the game up with a four-run fifth inning on RBIs from Hart, Lehman, and Tilley.
  • Dominican added single tallies in both the sixth and seventh innings while holding the hosts scoreless to carry a 7-5 lead into the eighth.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth with two outs, but DU escaped without a run scoring to maintain its lead.
  • The Stars broke the game open with eight runs on six hits in the ninth to extend the lead to 15-5.
  • Lehman paced the Warriors, who recorded 11 hits as a team, with a 4-for-5 and two-RBI performance at the plate. Jake Constien (Sun Prairie, Wis.) suffered the loss on the hill, allowing two earned runs with six strikeouts in 4.1 innings of relief.

  • Sessa went 2-for-2 with four RBI in game one, while Hayden Young did not receive a decision after allowing three earned runs with seven strikeouts in 7.1 innings of work for DU.
  • In game two, Johnny Condron led the Stars with a 5-for-7 performance with three doubles, while Bryant Bagshaw improved to 7-0 after allowing four runs in 6.0 innings.
