Offense Comes Alive In Senior Day Split With Regents

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – Behind 17 hits and 11 runs in the nightcap, the Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team earned a Senior Day split against the visiting Rockford Regents Friday afternoon to close out their 2019 campaign. The Warriors suffered a 5-0 loss in the opener before registering an 11-3 victory to close out the day. WLC honored its three seniors, Jake Schwall (West Allis, Wis.), Sid Lehman (Theresa, Wis.), and Kyle Baron (Mukwonago, Wis.) in between contests.

  • The Regents tallied three singles in the first inning and pushed two runs across to take an early 2-0 lead.
  • Rockford added another run in the third inning with a single followed by a double, increasing its lead to 3-0 after three frames.
  • RU collected three more singles in the sixth and used a sacrifice fly to plate one more run, extending the lead to 4-0.
  • Daven Eidem (Los Angeles, Calif.) collected the first hit of the contest for the Warriors in the sixth inning with a single, but WLC still faced a four-run deficit.
  • Ryan Dominick (Bartlett, Ill.) led off the seventh with a single and Joey Tilley (Muskego, Wis.) reached base after being hit by a pitch, then both runners advanced on a wild pitch, but WLC was unable to plate either runner.
  • The Regents added one more run in the eighth inning, taking the opener 5-0.
  • Dominick and Eidem collected the lone hits in the contest for the Warriors, while Lehman suffered the loss on the mound, allowing two runs over 1.1 innings.

  • Schwall singled in the first and stole second, then scored after an RBI single from Tilley to give the Warriors an early 1-0 advantage.
  • Schwall singled again in the third inning and moved to third on a throwing error, then scored after Lehman drew a walk from a wild pitch, pushing WLC's lead to 2-0 after three innings.
  • The Regents got a run back in the fourth inning after a single and stolen base, then an RBI single to cut Wisconsin Lutheran's lead to one.
  • After a leadoff double from Matthew Schulenburg (Hampshire, Ill.), Jayson Walczak-Zelem (Oak Creek, Wis.) drove him in with a single to left to give the Warriors a 3-1 lead in the fourth.
  • WLC used three straight singles from Tilley, Nick Poblocki (Bartlett, Ill.), and Schulenburg to push its lead to 4-1 after five innings.
  • The Regents pulled back within two runs in the sixth after a WLC error, but RU committed an error of its own in the bottom half of the inning to allow the Warriors to plate another run for a 5-2 lead.
  • Rockford used two hits in the seventh, including an RBI single to center, to trim Wisconsin Lutheran's lead back down to two.
  • The Warriors tallied four hits in the seventh, including two-RBI singles from Josh Enevold (Jackson, Wis.) and Schwall to push their lead to four runs.
  • Jack Schroeder (Bristol, Wis.) drove in a run with an RBI groundout and Enevold plated another run with a single in the eighth to give the Warriors the 11-3 triumph.
  • Schulenburg led the Warriors with a 5-for-5 performance, scoring three runs, while Schwall and Tilley each added three hits and two runs. 
  • Dylan Knoespel (Brillion, Wis.) struck out 10 over 6.1 innings to earn his first win of the year.

  • Troy Tucci led the Regents with four hits in the opener, while Zack Jones earned the win in the circle. He allowed just two hits over 9.0 innings and struck out 14.
  • Tucci and Jacob Toepfer each had two hits in game two, while Joseph Kmiec suffered the loss, allowing three runs over 5.0 innings.

  • The Warriors conclude their 2019 season with a 14-25 overall record and a 5-17 record in the NACC.
