Warriors Stymied By Bears In Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team returned to the diamond on Thursday for its third doubleheader of the week against Coast Guard Academy at the Player Development Complex. The Warriors were held to just five hits as the Bears swept both games from WLC by scores of 3-0 and 16-0. Coast Guard starting pitchers combined for 23 strikeouts over the 14-inning twinbill.

  • Final Scores: Coast Guard 3, Wisconsin Lutheran 0; Coast Guard 16, Wisconsin Lutheran 0
  • Records: Wisconsin Lutheran (0-7), Coast Guard (4-3)
  • Location: Lee County Player Development Complex, Fort Myers, Fla.

  • The Warriors and Bears battled through a pitchers' dual for the first four innings as the game stood scoreless. WLC sophomore Ryan Dominick (Bartlett, Ill.) reached on an error and stole second in the first inning, but it would be the only runner in scoring position for the Green and White in game one.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran starter junior Jacob Kopplin (Rowlett, Texas) stranded six Bears baserunners through the first four innings to keep the contest deadlocked at 0-0.
  • Coast Guard cracked the scoring column in the fifth inning with two straight two-out hits for a 1-0 lead. CGA added a two-run single in the sixth inning for a 3-0 advantage. Senior Levi Schriefer (San Diego, Calif.) came on in relief to strikeout both batters he faced to keep the deficit at three runs.
  • Sophomore Josh Enevold (Jackson, Wis.) recorded the Green and White's first hit of the game in the sixth but was stranded at first and the Warriors were retired in order in the seventh for the 3-0 final.
  • Kopplin tossed 5.1 innings on the mound and gave up three runs on nine hits.

  • Coast Guard scored early and often on the Warriors in game two, plating seven runs on five hits in the first inning.
  • WLC had its first two runners reach base in the third on a single from Dominick and a double from sophomore Ethan Orcutt (East Dubuque, Ill.), but the Bears' starting pitcher fanned the next two hitters to escape the jam.
  • CGA added single tallies in the third and fourth innings on a RBI groundout and two-out single to add to its total.
  • The Bears added another seven-run spot, including three unearned, in the sixth on four hits for their final tallies of the game.
  • Orcutt finished with two of the Warriors' four hits in the nightcap.

  • Nolan Johnson went 3-for-3 with a run scored in game one for the Bears. Brett Sullivan allowed just one hit over 7.0 innings while striking out 12 to earn the complete game shutout.
  • Johnson led Coast Guard's offense again in game two, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. PJ Gravalec scattered four hits while fanning 11 in the complete game shutout.

  • The Warriors wrap up their 10th straight trip to the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic tomorrow when they play two games against Bethel (Minn.) (3-3). First pitch is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. CST at the Player Development Complex. Live stats links for both games will be available at WLCSports.com.
