Baseball Drops Season-Opening Twinbill To Comets

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team opened its 2020 season for the 10th straight year at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Sunday, falling 7-4 and 8-0 to Olivet at Terry Park.

  • The Comets rallied with two outs in the third on a two-RBI double off the left field fence.
  • The Warriors were able to take the lead in the top of the fifth on a RBI-single to right field by sophomore Evan Sadowski (New Berlin, Wis.), a two-run double to left-center from senior Spencer Michaelis (Wauwatosa, Wis.), and a RBI-single up the middle by senior Brannigan Hart (Davie, Fla.).
  • Olivet regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning scoring three runs off three hits for a 5-4 advantage.
  • The Comets added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on a pair of sacrifice flies, one on a diving catch by Michaelis deep in the hole at second and the other on a fly to center.
  • Senior Dylan Knoespel (Brillion, Wis.) gave up five runs (all earned) on six hits with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. Michaelis led the Warriors with two hits and two RBIs.
  • Freshman Danny Cain (Jackson, Wis.) had his first collegiate hit for Wisconsin Lutheran on a single through the right side in the fifth inning.

  • The Comets plated their first runs of game two in the third inning and added three more in the top half of the fourth, giving OC a 5-0 lead.
  • The Warriors threatened for the first time in the fifth on a one-out double down the right field line by sophomore Matthew Schulenburg (Hampshire, Ill.), but he would be stranded at second base after back-to-back flyouts.
  • Olivet added three more insurance runs in the top of the seventh off two RBI singles and a sacrifice bunt.
  • Senior Jake Wiedower (St. Francis, Wis.) suffered the loss for WLC giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts.

  • Aaron Gillespie and Matt Hewitt had two hits each for Olivet in game one. Brendon Redding earned the win in 5.0 innings of work allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out three.
  • Hewitt and Ty Metzger collected two hits apiece to lead the Comets in game two. Metzger also earned the complete game shutout allowing just four hits with five strikeouts.

  • The Warriors play their third game of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic tomorrow when they face Hiram (1-1). The Terriers are coming off a 15-0 defeat at the hands of Rockford.
