Hot-Shooting Wartburg Hands Warriors First Loss

WAVERLY, Iowa (WLCSports.com) – Wartburg shot over 60 percent from the floor while holding the Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball team to its lowest shooting percentage on the young season, as the host Knights handed the Warriors their first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon, 78-59, in the championship game of the Buzz Levick Tip-Off Tournament.

  • The Warriors got off to a hot start by making their first three shots of the game for an early 8-3 lead. Senior Drew Bernhagen (Markesan, Wis.) hit back-to-back triples in the opening minute-and-a-half run.
  • The Knights took the lead back at 10-9 and used a 22-7 scoring run to take a 16-point lead with 10:31 remaining in the first half.
  • Wartburg, which shot 65.5 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, led by as many as 23 points before taking a 47-27 halftime lead.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran widdled its deficit down to 16 points at the 11:29 mark of the second half, but the Knights seemed to have an answer for everything.
  • The Knights built their lead up to a game-high 26 points under the three-minute mark before the Green and White finished the game on a 7-0 scoring run.
  • Sophomore Grayson Goetz (Aurora, Ill.) scored 12 points to lead the Warriors, while Bernhagen added 11 points. Freshman Nathaniel Luebke (Valders, Wis.) scored nine points in nine minutes off the bench.
  • Sophomore Ryan Broeckel (Chilton, Wis.) paced WLC with seven rebounds.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran was held to 31 percent (22-for-71) shooting and was out-scored in the paint, 50-32. The Green and White forced Wartburg into 20 turnovers and converted them into 21 points.
