10th-Ranked Spartans Hold Off Warriors For Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AURORA, Ill. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team took a 4-2 lead over 10th-ranked Aurora into the sixth inning of game one on Wednesday before the Spartans scored seven over the next three innings. WLC had the tying run at the plate in the ninth, but couldn't rally enough runs as it fell 9-5. Aurora won game two by a score of 11-0 in seven innings at Stuart Sports Complex.

  • Final Scores: No. 10 Aurora 9, Wisconsin Lutheran 5; No. 10 Aurora 11, Wisconsin Lutheran 0
  • Records: Wisconsin Lutheran (1-9), No. 10 Aurora (11-0)
  • Location: Stuart Sports Complex, Aurora, Ill.

  • The Warriors' first three batters singled to start the game to load the bases, but Aurora induced a double play and fly out to limit the damage to one first-inning run.
  • The Spartans evened the score at 1-1 in the second on a fielder's choice RBI groundout.
  • Following a scoreless third inning where both teams left a pair of runners on base, WLC plated two runs in the fourth on a RBI double from freshman Cooper Pease (Fort Atkinson, Wis.) that drove home junior Josh Enevold (Jackson, Wis.). Sophomore Dylan Pease followed with a sacrifice squeeze to score senior Jayson Walczak-Zelem (Oak Creek, Wis.).
  • Aurora got one run back in its half of the fourth with a two-out RBI single to cut the lead to 3-2.
  • After a leadoff triple in the fifth by junior Ryan Dominick (Bartlett, Ill.), junior Matthew Schulenburg (Hampshire, Ill.) drove him on the next at-bat with a grounder to short.
  • AU struck for four runs in the sixth inning on three hits as three straight batters reached after two outs as the hosts jumped in front for the first time 6-4.
  • The Spartans added a two-run home run in the seventh and a RBI single in the eighth to increase their lead to 9-4.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran didn't go down quietly in its last at-bat, as junior Tyler Schoemann (Algonquin, Ill.) leadoff with a walk, followed by back-to-back singles from sophomore Tyler Wroblewski (Sussex, Wis.) and Dominick, who drove in freshman pinch-runner Spencer Jens (New London, Wis.). Schulenburg followed by drawing another walk to load the bases with nobody out. Aurora retired the next two batters on swinging strikeouts and Wroblewski was thrown out attempting to steal home for the game's final out.
  • Dominick finished 3-for-5 with a RBI and run scored for the Warriors, who also got two hits each from Wroblewski, Walczak-Zelem, and junior Nick Poblocki (Bartlett, Ill.).
  • Senior Joe Serbiak (Brookfield, Wis.) suffered the loss in three innings of relief work of freshman starter Andrew Muffler (Waukesha, Wis.). Muffler allowed two earned runs over five innings in his first start of the year.

  • The Spartans scored in each of the first four innings of game two, including four runs in the fourth, while holding the Warriors to just one hit on a double by Schulenburg for a 9-0 lead.
  • AU added its two final runs in the sixth inning on a pair of RBI singles.
  • WLC put two runners on base in both the sixth and seventh innings but was unable to plate any runs.
  • Dominick, Schulenburg, junior Evan Sadowski (New Berlin, Wis.), sophomore Carter Raabe (Mukwonago, Wis.) each registered hits for Wisconsin Lutheran in the second game.
  • Freshman Hunter Martin (Whitewater, Wis.) pitched two innings and was dealt the loss.

  • Corey Vondra went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored in game one for the Spartans. Nathan Smith picked up the win after tossing four scoreless innings of relief.
  • Justin Sartori was 3-for-4 and Eric Johansen had four RBI for AU in game two. Kyle Blunt picked up the win on the mound after pitching the first five innings, allowing one hit on four strikeouts.

  • The Warriors host Dominican (3-5) on Saturday in a 12 p.m. home-opening doubleheader at Neumann Family Baseball Field. Live coverage links will be available at WLCSports.com.
