Strong Pitching Helps Warriors Win Two In Peoria

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PEORIA, Ill. (WLCSports.com) – Strong pitching performances helped the Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team win a pair of games on Friday at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex. The Warriors defeated Mount Mary 5-1 in their first game of the day before winning 8-2 over Elmhurst in the afternoon.

  • Final Scores: Wisconsin Lutheran 5, Mount Mary 1; Wisconsin Lutheran 8, Elmhurst 2
  • Records: Wisconsin Lutheran (3-2), Mount Mary (1-6), Elmhurst (0-2)
  • Location: Louisville Slugger Sports Complex, Peoria, Ill.

  • Mount Mary opened the scoring in the top of the first after a ground-rule double to left field plated one. The Blue Angels stranded runners on second and third after sophomore Jena Almodovar (Romeoville, Ill.) stuck out one and got a pair of groundouts to end the inning.
  • The Warriors were able to get runners on base in four of the first five innings, but were unable to score any runs. Mount Mary got a couple of hits in the third and fourth innings but good defensive plays kept the Warriors down just one run.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran's offense finally broke through in the sixth inning, scoring five runs to take a 5-1 lead. After the first run scored on an error by the left fielder, senior Charolette Ropas (New Berlin, Wis.) drove home the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice. One more scored on a passed ball, and singles from freshman Bri Biermann (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and junior Katie Scott (Sallisaw, Okla.) each scored one more run.
  • The Blue Angels collected pair of two-out hits in the top of the seventh, but a groundout closed out the game for a Warriors win.
  • Almodovar tossed all seven innings, allowing one unearned run on eight hits while striking out three. She improved to 2-1 on the season with the win.
  • Biermann and Scott both finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a run batted run. Biermann scored once and stole a pair of bases as well. The Warriors finished with seven hits as a team and stole four bases.

  • The Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-out home run to left center by junior Avery Blauvelt (Wellman, Iowa). WLC added two more runs in the top of the fourth after senior Maddie Lindemann (Watertown, Wis.) drove one home with a single to short. Blauvelt drove in the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
  • Elmhurst got one back in the bottom of the fourth, but the Warriors responded in the fifth, scoring one on a double to center field by Almodovar.
  • WLC added a couple more runs in the top half of the seventh, with freshman Maddy Chestolowski (Appleton, Wis.) driving home two with a home run left center. Almodovar doubled to right center to put another runner in scoring position, and freshman Lexi Martin (Westfield, Ind.) came up with a two-out single to drive her home.
  • Elmhurst scored one final run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Warriors won 8-2.
  • Sophomore Hanna Gibbons (Markesan, Wis.) got the win, tossing two innings and allowing a pair of hits.
  • Martin went 3-for-4 to lead the WLC, which finished with 10 hits. Almodovar recorded a pair of doubles while Blauvelt drove in three runs.

  • Brianna Lupa fell to 1-3 on the season with the loss in the circle for Mount Mary. She allowed five unearned runs on seven hits while striking out four. Marissa Heraly went 1-for-3 and drove in the Blue Angels' lone run with a double.
  • Brianna Pisauro was handed the loss for Elmhurst, giving up five runs (three earned) across six innings. The Blue Jays finished with six hits, with Mia Train posting two.

  • The Warriors return to action for a pair of games at Edgewood (2-2) on Saturday, March 20. First pitch of the non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 12 p.m.
