WLC Drops NACC Twinbill To Sabres

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team dropped a road doubleheader to Marian on Saturday afternoon at Herr-Baker Field. The Warriors fell 3-1 in the first game and lost 7-2 in game two.

  • Final Scores: Marian 3, Wisconsin Lutheran 1; Marian 7, Wisconsin Lutheran 2
  • Records: Wisconsin Lutheran (5-18, 0-6 NACC), Marian (9-15, 5-1 NACC)
  • Location: Herr-Baker Field, Fond du Lac, Wis.

  • Neither offense found much success over the first three innings, with both starting pitchers minimizing scoring opportunities. Warriors senior starter Jake Wiedower (St. Francis, Wis.) had stranded three Sabres runners heading into the fourth to keep the game scoreless.
  • Marian broke through in the fourth inning, scoring the first run on a sacrifice fly to center field. The Sabres added two more runs on a two-out single to right center field to take a 3-0 lead going into the fifth.
  • The Sabres threatened to add to their lead in the fifth, but Wiedower struck out the final two batters to leave the bases loaded.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran got on the board in the ninth inning when freshman Spencer Jens (New London, Wis.) drove home a run on a groundout to second base. WLC left a runner on third base as Marian held on for the 3-1 win.
  • Jens and junior Josh Enevold (Jackson, Wis.) both went 2-for-4 to lead the Warriors' offense. Junior Nick Poblocki (Bartlett, Ill.) scored a run for the Green and White.
  • Wiedower dropped to 1-3 on the season after allowing three runs in seven innings with three strikeouts.

  • The Sabres put two runs on the board in the top of the second on a two-out double to left field.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran got back-to-back two-out hits from junior Ryan Dominick (Bartlett, Ill.) and Enevold in the third inning, but both runners were stranded as the inning ended with a groundout.
  • In the fourth, sophomore Danny Cain (Jackson, Wis.) and senior Jayson Walczak-Zelem (Oak Creek, Wis.) singled and Cain scored on a double to left center by Jens. Walczak-Zelem evened the game at 2-2 after a Sabres error allowed him to score with two outs.
  • Marian regained the lead with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning and tacked on three more in the sixth with a pair of doubles. The Sabres added one more in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach for a 7-2 win.
  • WLC finished with eight hits, with Dominick, Cain, and Jens each recording two hits. The Warriors left eight runners on base.
  • Sophomore Evan Theis (Richfield, Wis.) allowed three runs in five innings and was charged with the loss.

  • Logan Lange improved to 2-3 on the mound with the win in game one, throwing a complete game and allowing just one run while striking out seven. Riley Palmquist finished 2-for-4 with two RBI at the plate.
  • Taylor Middaugh held the Warriors to two runs over eight innings on the mound and struck out four for the win. The Sabres recorded five doubles and Palmquist went 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored.

  • The Warriors host Marian for the final two games of the weekend series tomorrow with first pitch slated for 12 p.m. at Neumann Family Baseball Field. Live coverage links will be available at WLCSports.com.
