Baseball Walks-Off Sabres For First NACC Win

WAUWATOSA, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team let a two-run lead slip away in the ninth, but scored the winning run in its last at-bat for a 6-5 game one win over Marian on Sunday at Neumann Family Baseball Field. The Sabres held on for a 4-3 game two win.

  • The Warriors grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener behind three hits and an error. Junior Ryan Dominick (Bartlett, Ill.) scored from third after freshman Cooper Pease (Fort Atkinson, Wis.) stole second, and junior Nick Poblocki (Bartlett, Ill.) drove home Pease with a single to right.
  • The Sabres scored twice in the second with a two-out, two-RBI single to even the score.
  • Junior Ethan Orcutt (East Dubuque, Ill.) gave WLC a 3-2 lead in the fourth after his RBI single to left center plated Poblocki.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran left the bases full in the fifth and Marian tied the game again at 3-3 in the sixth on a two-base sacrifice fly to right.
  • Back-to-back RBI doubles in the eighth from sophomore Carter Raabe (Mukwonago, Wis.) and Dominick gave the Green and White a two-run lead heading into the ninth.
  • MU loaded the bases with one out in the ninth and scored two runs on a walk and sac fly to knot the game at 5-5. 
  • A one-out walk drawn by senior Jayson Walczak-Zelem (Oak Creek, Wis.) followed by a double from sophomore Evan Sadowski (New Berlin, Wis.) put two runners in scoring position. Orcutt followed with a flyout to left and the throw home sailed high over the catcher's head allowing the winning run to score.
  • Poblocki finished 3-for-4 with a RBI and run scored for the Warriors, who tallied 14 hits in the game. Freshman Hunter Martin (Whitewater, Wis.) earned the win in relief for freshman starter Andrew Muffler (Waukesha, Wis.), who pitched 8.1 innings and allowed three earned runs.

  • Following four scoreless frames put up by both starting pitchers, Marian came through with two runs in the fifth inning on a back-to-back RBI single and double with two outs.
  • The Sabres made it 3-0 in the seventh after a leadoff home run.
  • The Warriors evened the score at 3-3 in the seventh after a three-run home run to left center from Raabe drove in freshman Spencer Jens (New London, Wis.) and Walczak-Zelem.
  • MU scored the eventual winning run in the ninth after a runner from third took off for home when the batter drew a walk and went immediately to second base.
  • Raabe went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored for WLC. Senior starter Joe Serbiak (Brookfield, Wis.) pitched six innings and allowed two runs while striking out six.

  • Michael Snow and Nick Bastien each had two hits for the Sabres in game one. Snow had two RBI and Bastien scored twice. Connor Medvecz pitched two-thirds of an inning and suffered the loss.
  • Sean Meyer went 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run for Marian in game two. Connor Medvecz tossed two scoreless innings to collect the win in relief.

  • The Warriors travel to Watertown on Tuesday for a pair of non-conference games against Maranatha (0-8). First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m. Live coverage links will be available at WLCSports.com.
