Warriors Roll Past Sabercats For Non-Conference Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WATERTOWN, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – The Warriors' pitching staff tossed 14 scoreless innings and the offense recorded 20 runs as the Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team swept Maranatha in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at Washington Park. WLC won the first game 7-0 before posting a season-high 19 hits in a 13-0 win in game two.

  • Final Scores: Wisconsin Lutheran 7, Maranatha 0; Wisconsin Lutheran 13, Maranatha 0
  • Records: Wisconsin Lutheran (8-19), Maranatha (0-10)
  • Location: Washington Park, Watertown, Wis.

  • In the first inning, both teams stranded runners in scoring position as the starting pitchers each closed the frame with a strikeout and a groundout to escape trouble.
  • The Warriors scored once in the second inning as freshman Spencer Jens (New London, Wis.) drove in a run with a groundout. WLC threatened in the third as senior Jayson Walczak-Zelem (Oak Creek, Wis.) led off with a double, but the Sabercats retired the next three batters.
  • With the bases loaded in the fourth inning, Wisconsin Lutheran scored its second run of the game as Walczak-Zelem crossed home on a wild pitch.
  • In the sixth, a pair of Maranatha errors resulted in a four-run frame for the Warriors. Two runs scored on an error by the third baseman, and junior Nick Poblocki (Bartlett, Ill.) plated sophomore Carter Raabe (Mukwonago, Wis.) with a single to right center. The final run scored on the second error to give WLC a six-run advantage.
  • The Green and White added one more in the seventh, as Raabe connected on a RBI double to left center.
  • Poblocki and junior Ethan Orcutt (East Dubuque, Ill.) each recorded a pair of hits to pace the Warriors. WLC drew seven walks, including four by freshman Tyler Johnson (Castle Rock, Colo.).

  • The Warriors started the first inning with three consecutive hits, including a two-RBI single by junior Josh Enevold (Jackson, Wis.). WLC added two more in the inning, as junior Joshua Carlson (Tomah, Wis.) ripped a two-out, two-RBI single through the left side of the infield.
  • The first two runners reached base for Wisconsin Lutheran in the second, and both scored on a triple to center field by junior Ryan Dominick (Bartlett, Ill.). Enevold drove in Dominick with a single, and freshman Foster Engelhardt (North Richland Hills, Texas) doubled down the left field line to plate Enevold to increase the WLC lead to 8-0.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran tallied two more runs in the fifth via a groundout by Enevold and a single by Engelhardt.
  • In the sixth, the Warriors posted three consecutive RBI singles to take a 13-run lead over Maranatha. Sophomore Joseph Cook (Marshall, Wis.), sophomore Dylan Pease (Fort Atkinson, Wis.), and freshman Matt Edwards (Hanover, Minn.) each drove in one run in the inning.
  • WLC finished with a season-high 13 runs and 19 hits, with Pease, Enevold, and Engelhardt each tallying three hits to lead the team. Enevold drove in four runs to pace the offense, while Dominick, Engelhardt, and Carlson all finished with two.
  • Senior Jacob Kopplin (Rowlett, Texas) recorded the win as five Warriors pitchers combined for the shutout. Kopplin threw three innings and struck out three batters. Wisconsin Lutheran's pitching staff combined for eight strikeouts and allowed just three hits.

  • David Cripps finished 2-for-4 with a double as the Sabercats tallied six hits in game one. Sam Ratledge was handed the loss on the mound after allowing two runs in four innings.
  • Cripps, Shane Paruch, and Drew Smith each recorded a hit in game two. Cripps also threw four innings on the mound, allowing two runs and striking out a pair.

  • The Warriors return to NACC play on Saturday when they host conference-leading Lakeland (10-8, 6-2 NACC) on Saturday for the 2020 Senior Day. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12 p.m. Live coverage links will be available at WLCSports.com.
