Kamitani's Complete Game Shutout Sends Baseball To First Win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
FORT MYERS, Fla. (WLCSports.com) – Junior Fabio Kamitani (Naviraí, Brazil) faced just one batter over the minimum as he delivered a seven-inning complete game shutout to lead the Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team to its first win of the season, defeating Defiance 3-0 at Terry Park on Tuesday morning. The Yellow Jackets earned a split in the doubleheader by defeating the Warriors 4-3 with a walk-off single in the ninth inning of game two at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

  • Final Scores: Wisconsin Lutheran 3, Defiance 0; Defiance 4, Wisconsin Lutheran 3
  • Records: Wisconsin Lutheran (1-6), Defiance (3-3)
  • Location: Terry Park Sports Complex, Fort Myers, Fla.

  • In an early pitcher's duel, the Warriors were the first to crack the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-out RBI single from senior Ethan Orcutt (East Dubuque, Ill.) to score senior Matthew Schulenburg (Hampshire, Ill.).
  • WLC capitalized on a Yellow Jackets' error in the fifth inning as freshman Elijah Shevey (Muskego, Wis.) scored an insurance run following a leadoff single and a RBI fielder's choice from sophomore Foster Engelhardt (North Richland Hills, Texas) stretched Wisconsin Lutheran's lead to 3-0.
  • Defiance threatened in the top of the sixth as its first baserunner reached scoring position, but Kamitani recorded a swinging strikeout to keep the Green and White's advantage at 3-0.
  • Orcutt paced the offense with two hits, a walk, and a RBI in the opener.
  • Kamitani earned his first win of the season, allowing no runs while scattering three hits with no walks and five strikeouts in 7.0 innings on the mound. It was his first career complete game.

  • The Yellow Jackets' offense struck early in game two, scoring two runs on three hits to take a 2-0 lead after the opening frame.
  • After a two-out double from freshman Tyler Danko (Milwaukee, Wis.), junior Danny Cain (Jackson, Wis.) singled to left field to cut the lead to 3-1 in the second inning. Defiance threatened in the bottom half of the inning before sophomore Gabe Knight (Brighton, Mich.) stranded a pair in scoring position to keep the score at 3-1.
  • WLC evened the score at 3-3 in the fourth on a two-RBI single from junior Carter Raabe (Mukwonago, Wis.) that plated Engelhardt and senior Nick Poblocki (Bartlett, Ill.).
  • Neither team threatened to score until the Warriors' half of the eighth when they had a runner called out at the plate trying to score and give the visitors a late-game lead.
  • After a lead-off walk in the bottom of the ninth, the Yellow Jackets walked-off the Green and White on a two-out RBI single down the right field line.
  • Raabe led the Warriors with two hits and two RBI in the nightcap. Poblocki and Danko each added a double.
  • Knight allowed just one earned run in 5.0 innings on the mound for WLC. Junior Blake Bontrager (Wellman, Iowa) suffered the loss despite allowing just one run in 3.2 innings of relief.

  • The Warriors have a day off tomorrow before playing Merchant Marine (3-5) on Thursday morning at Terry Park in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. First pitch is scheduled for 8 a.m. CST.
