Warriors Secure Thursday Sweep Of Saints, Green Terror

CLERMONT, Fla. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team bounced back from its first two losses at The Spring Games by winning twice on Thursday morning. The Warriors defeated St. Lawrence 5-1 in the opener, before earning a 7-4 victory over McDaniel. Freshmen Callie Terrill (Minooka, Ill.) and Olivia Plewa (Greenfield, Wis.) combined for 11.2 innings pitched, allowing one run on four hits over the two games.

  • The Warriors scored two first-inning runs in the top half of the frame after freshman Taylor Peterson (Beloit, Wis.) reached on a walk and came around to score when sophomore Jena Almodovar (Romeoville, Ill.) reached on an error. Sophomore Lexi Martin (Westfield, Wis.) crossed home plate on a double steal attempt for a 2-0 lead.
  • WLC stranded a pair of runners on base in both the fourth and sixth innings, while still clinging to a two-run lead. 
  • The Saints scored their first run of the game in the sixth, but Terrill left the tying run stranded at third as she struckout the final batter of the inning.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran scored three big insurance runs in the seventh off of four hits. Peterson singled home senior Aerin Moberg (Wheaton, Ill.), senior Gracie Wilson (Deerfield, Wis.) scored on a wild pitch, and Martin followed with a RBI double plating Peterson.
  • Terrill, who retired St. Lawrence in order in its last at-bat, tossed her second complete game of the week. She allowed one run on just three hits with no walks and four strikeouts. 
  • Wilson, Peterson, and Martin had two hits each for the Green and White, Peterson also scored a pair of runs.
  • The Warriors plated a trio of runs in the first inning on four hits. Peterson and Wilson crossed home plate on Almodovar's single and senior Katie Scott (Sallisaw, Okla.) followed a two-out RBI double that scored Almodovar.
  • The Green Terror took the lead in the third inning on four runs on four hits. WLC escaped any further damage by stranding the bases loaded.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran knotted the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the inning when Peterson scored on freshman Makayla Huff's (Galesburg, Ill.) sacrifice fly to left field.
  • The Green and White grabbed a 5-4 lead in the fourth when sophomore Bre Hoy (McHenry, Ill.) scored on Wilson's groundout to second.
  • The Warriors tacked on two insurance runs in the fifth when sophomore Bri Biermann (Fond du Lac, Wis.) stole home on a double steal and Hoy's single to left plated Scott.
  • Plewa, who retired McDaniel in order in the sixth and seventh, pitched 4.2 innings of relief to pickup the win in the circle. She surrendered just one hit and with no runs allowed.
  • Peterson paced the offense with three hits and two runs scored. Almodovar added two hits, a RBI, and a run scored.
  • The Warriors play their final two games of The Spring Games tomorrow morning when they face Salve Regina (2-1) and Carroll (5-3) at Hancock Park. First pitch is scheduled for 8 a.m. CST at Hancock Park. Live coverage links with be available for both games at WLCsports.com.
