Warriors Rally Past Mariners With Wild Finish

Box Score

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WLCSports.com) – Freshman Tyler Danko (Milwaukee, Wis.) hit a two-run double in the top of the ninth inning to give the Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team the lead en route to a 14-10 back-and-forth victory over Merchant Marine on Thursday morning in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at Terry Park. The Warriors scored all 14 of their runs over the last four innings, including five in the ninth inning, to complete the comeback victory.

  • Final Score: Wisconsin Lutheran 14, Merchant Marine 10
  • Records: Wisconsin Lutheran (2-6), Merchant Marine (3-7)
  • Location: Terry Park, Fort Myers, Fla.

  • After stranding the bases loaded in the top of the third, the Mariners got on the scoreboard first with a pair of runs in the bottom half to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Merchant Marine took advantage of a two-out error to plate a single tally in the fifth to push its lead to 3-0.
  • The Warriors offense exploded for seven runs in the sixth on five hits and capitalizing on three errors. After the first three batters reached in the inning, Junior Danny Cain (Jackson, Wis.) plated a pair on a two-RBI double down the left field line. Cain later came around to score on a RBI single from Danko. After a RBI sacrifice fly from senior Josh Enevold (Jackson, Wis.), sophomore Foster Engelhardt (North Richland Hills, Texas) launched his first home run of the season, a solo blast to give WLC a 7-3 lead. USMMA answered quickly with a five-run inning in its half of the sixth to reclaim the lead at 8-7.
  • Senior Matthew Schulenburg (Hampshire, Ill.) led off the seventh with a double, and senior Ethan Orcutt (East Dubuque, Ill.) plated him on a two-out single to knot the score at 8-8. The Mariners retook the lead again in their half of the inning on a solo home run.
  • Senior Ryan Dominick (Bartlett, Ill.) hit his fifth home run of the season to start the Warriors' half of the eighth to tie the game at 9-9. USMMA answered with a leadoff home run of its own to take a 10-9 lead going into the ninth inning.
  • Following a junior Carter Raabe (Mukwonago, Wis.) leadoff hit by pitch and a Cain single, Danko roped a double to the gap in left center to plate both runners and give the Green and White a late 10-9 lead. Engelhardt added another RBI later in the inning on a fielder's choice for an insurance run before senior Nick Poblocki (Bartlett, Ill.) added a two-out, two-RBI double to give the Warriors a 14-10 lead.
  • Five different players had multi-hit games as the Warriors recorded 17 hits in the contest. Dominick and Engelhardt each tallied three hits with a home run. Danko added three RBI with a pair of hits.
  • Junior Glavine Matthes (Appleton, Wis.) earned his first win of the season after throwing 2.2 innings of relief and allowing a single run.

  • The Warriors conclude their spring break trip on Friday morning against St. Michael's (1-8) at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at Terry Park. First pitch is scheduled for 8 a.m. CST.
