Baseball Sweeps Rockford In Return To Neumann Family Field

WAUWATOSA, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team earned a conference sweep against Rockford in their home opener on Friday afternoon at a blustery Neumann Family Field. The Warriors won the opener 8-7 in 10 innings on a walk-off single from senior Ryan Dominick (Bartlett, Ill.), before winning the nightcap 4-2 behind seven strong innings on the mound from sophomore Andrew Muffler (Waukesha, Wis.).

  • The Regents scored single runs in each of the first two innings to take an early 2-0 lead after two innings.
  • The Warriors got on the scoreboard in the fourth with a leadoff solo home run from senior Ethan Orcutt (East Dubuque, Ill.) to left center to cut the lead in half at 2-1 through four innings.
  • WLC knotted the score at 2-2 in the fifth after freshman Tyler Danko (Milwaukee, Wis.) started the inning with a single and later scored on a throwing error as Dominick stole second.
  • For the third straight inning, Wisconsin Lutheran added a run to take the lead 3-2 in the sixth. Orcutt started the frame with a double to left center, stole third, and later crossed the plate on an RBI groundout from junior Joseph Cook (Marshall, Wis.).
  • Junior Fabio Kamitani (Naviraí, Brazil) allowed just three hits over his final six innings on the mound and worked around a pair of errors to keep the Green and White's advantage at 3-2 going into the bottom of the eighth.
  • In the eighth, the Warriors gained separation with four insurance runs to extend their lead to 7-2. Freshman Noah Zaccanti (Geneva, Ill.) started the scoring with a RBI single to left field to plate Orcutt who led off the inning with a walk. WLC capitalized on a throwing error by Rockford to plate another run in the inning. With two outs, Dominick beat out a single to the shortstop for a RBI and had another runner score on another Rockford error.
  • RU battled back to even the game up with a five-run top of the ninth in part to two errors and three hits. The Regents saw the first six batters reach base in the inning and tied the game up before senior Diego Solares (Huntley, Ill.) came in to control the damage and keep the game tied.
  • In the tenth, Rockford loaded the bases with two outs, but Solares escaped with the game still tied with a lineout to Dominick at short. In the bottom of the frame, Danko started the two-out rally with a double in the gap to right center. After senior Josh Enevold (Jackson, Wis.) walked, Dominick walked off for WLC with an opposite-field single.
  • Kamitani did not earn a decision but delivered eight innings on the mound, allowing just seven hits and two runs with six strikeouts. Solares earned his first win of the season out of the bullpen in 1.1 scoreless innings.
  • The Warriors' offense pounded out 13 hits in the contest. Dominick led the way with four hits and a pair of RBI, while Orcutt added a pair of hits with his double and home run and scored three runs. Senior Matthew Schulenburg (Hampshire, Ill.) collected also two hits.

  • Both teams left a pair of runners on base in their half of the first, but the Regents got on the scoreboard first with a two-out single in the top of the second.
  • The Warriors answered quickly in the home half of the second inning as they scored three runs on four hits in the frame. Schulenburg reached base via a walk to start off the inning before advancing to third base on a double from junior Danny Cain (Jackson, Wis.). Cook followed with a two-RBI single up the middle to give WLC a 2-1 lead. Cook later scored on a double to the right center field gap from Dominick, pushing WLC's lead to 3-1.
  • RU got a run back in the third after a pair of one-out singles and a throwing error by Wisconsin Lutheran to trim the deficit to 3-2.
  • The Green and White tacked on an insurance run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to right field from Enevold and push the hosts' lead to 4-2.
  • The Warriors' pitching staff limited Rockford's bats to just one hit after the third inning and sealed a 4-2 victory and a conference sweep.
  • Dominick and Orcutt each recorded multi-hit games in the nightcap, while Cook added a pair of RBI for the Warriors.
  • Muffler picked up his first victory of the season after allowing just one earned run and six hits in 7.0 innings. Junior Glavine Matthes (Appleton, Wis.) collected the save after finishing the game with 2.0 scoreless innings.
