Wisconsin Lutheran Drops Doubleheader To MSOE

GLENDALE, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team dropped a pair of NACC games to crosstown rival MSOE on Saturday afternoon. The Raiders won game one 18-4 in seven innings before winning the nightcap 11-4 at MSOE Raiders Stadium.

  • The Raiders struck early in the top of the first as the first three batters recorded hits followed by a sacrifice fly to take a quick 2-0 lead.
  • MSOE broke the game open with a seven-run outburst, highlighted by a three-run homerun, to extend the lead to 9-0 in the third inning.
  • The Raiders' offense tallied a pair of runs in the fourth, three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings, and a single run in the seventh to lead 18-0.
  • The Warriors got on the scoreboard in the seventh with a four-run frame. Sophomore Matt Edwards (Hanover, Minn.) started the rally with a single and later came around to score. Freshman Nathan Whisler (Tahoe City, Calif.), who had been hit by a pitch, scored on a sacrifice fly from senior Ethan Orcutt (East Dubuque, Ill.). Sophomore Jake Sillan (Castle Rock, Colo.) launched his second career homerun, a two-run blast to score senior Joshua Carlson (Tomah, Wis.) who had singled in the inning, to cut the deficit to 18-4. 
  • WLC recorded nine hits in the contest, led by two hits, including a double, from junior Danny Cain (Jackson, Wis.).

  • Both pitchers worked out of trouble in the first inning but the Raiders eventually cracked the scoreless tie in the third with a three-run frame on three hits.
  • The Warriors rallied in their half with a pair of runs to trim the deficit to 3-2. Sillan was hit by a pitch to start the inning and scored quickly as junior Joseph Cook (Marshall, Wis.) followed with a double to right field. Senior Josh Enevold (Jackson, Wis.) then reached on a bunt single before the pair executed a double steal to plate another run.
  • MSOE responded with three more runs of its own to extend its lead to 6-2 in the fourth inning but left the bases loaded.
  • WLC rallied for a pair of runs in the fifth as Cook and Enevold started the frame with back-to-back singles. After a fielder's choice and a stolen base, Cook scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Carter Raabe (Mukwonago, Wis.). Senior Nick Poblocki (Bartlett, Ill.) followed with a RBI double to left to cut the Raiders' lead to 6-4.
  • MSOE regained control with three runs on just one hit in the sixth and added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth to lead 11-4.
  • Enevold and Cook each recorded two hits and a stolen base for WLC in the nightcap.
