Warriors Erase Six-Run Deficit In Friday Split With Sabres

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – Freshman Noah Zaccanti (Geneva, Ill.) drove in the go-ahead run with two outs in the ninth inning as the Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team erased a 6-0 deficit for a dramatic 7-6 come-from-behind game one win over Marian on Friday afternoon at Herr-Baker Field. The Sabres salvaged the NACC split with the Warriors by winning game two 9-2.

  • Final Scores: Wisconsin Lutheran 7, Marian 6; Marian 9, Wisconsin Lutheran 2
  • Records: Wisconsin Lutheran (9-21, 4-14 NACC); Marian (11-19, 6-11 NACC)
  • Location: Herr-Baker Field, Fond du Lac, Wis.

  • The Sabres scored three first-inning runs on three hits for an early 3-0 lead over the Warriors.
  • MU added a RBI groundout in the third and a two-run single in the fourth for a 6-0 cushion.
  • WLC capitalized on a pair of Marian miscues in the fifth and cut its deficit in half with three runs. Freshman Tyler Danko (Milwaukee, Wis.) and senior Ryan Dominick (Bartlett, Ill.) each had run-scoring singles to cut into the Sabres' lead.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran tacked on two more runs in the sixth when senior Ethan Orcutt (East Dubuque, Ill.) scored on a wild pitch and Danko's RBI single plated senior Matthew Schulenburg (Hampshire, Ill.). The Green and White had a chance for more but stranded the bases full.
  • After a pair of scoreless frames from both teams, the Warriors strung together three straight two-out hits in the ninth. An infield single from Schulenburg followed by a wild pitch put two runners in scoring position after junior Carter Raabe (Mukwonago, Wis.) leadoff the inning with a walk. Another infield single from sophomore Jake Sillan (Castle Rock, Colo.) brought home Raabe, and Zaccanti drove home the go-ahead run with a single to right-center that brought in Schulenburg.
  • Junior Glavine Matthes (Appleton, Wis.), who faced the minimum in the two innings he pitched, induced a game-ending 4-6-3 double play in the ninth to secure his second win of the season on the mound.
  • Schulenburg led WLC with three hits and two runs scored, while Danko, Zaccanti, and senior Josh Enevold (Jackson, Wis.) added two hits apiece. Danko and Dominick collected two RBI each.

  • The Sabres scored five runs on just one hit in the second inning and added another two in the second on another hit for a 7-0 lead over the Warriors.
  • Following a two-out tally by MU in the sixth, WLC scored its first two runs in the seventh inning. Schulenburg and junior Danny Cain (Jackson, Wis.) both reached on errors which allowed senior Nick Poblocki (Bartlett, Ill.) to score, and junior Joseph Cook (Marshall, Wis.) singled home Schulenburg with a single to right.
  • Marian made it 9-2 in the seventh with a two-out RBI. Wisconsin Lutheran loaded the bases in the ninth with three hits, but wasn't able to plate a run.
  • Poblocki posted two of the eight hits for the Green and White in the nightcap.

  • The Warriors wrap up their stretch of 10 straight road games on Sunday when they travel to Chicago for a NACC doubleheader against Illinois Tech (8-24, 4-12 NACC). First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Ed Glancy Field. Live coverage links will be available for both games at WLCSports.com.
