Dominick Leads WLC To Road Sweep Over IIT

CHICAGO, Ill. (WLCSports.com) – Senior Ryan Dominick (Bartlett, Ill.) recorded seven hits, including two homeruns and seven RBI on the day to pace the Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team to a NACC sweep against Illinois Tech on Sunday afternoon at Ed Glancy Field. The Warriors won the opener 9-5 before scoring six unanswered runs over three final three innings of the nightcap to earn a 10-6 victory.

  • The Scarlet Hawks jumped out quickly with a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the first to claim an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Warriors knotted the game at 1-1 on a RBI double from Dominick in the third to plate freshman Noah Zaccanti (Geneva, Ill.), who leadoff the inning with a walk. IIT regained the lead in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly following a leadoff double.
  • Illinois Tech tallied a pair of two-out runs in the fourth to extend its lead to 4-1.
  • WLC trimmed its deficit in the top of the fifth on a two-run homerun from Dominick, his sixth of the season. The hosts threatened in the bottom of the inning as they loaded the bases, but Wisconsin Lutheran escaped the jam when Zaccanti picked off a Scarlet Hawks' baserunner at first.
  • The Green and White retook the lead with four runs in the sixth. Senior Ethan Orcutt (East Dubuque, Ill.) started the frame with a solo blast, his third of the season. Senior Matthew Schulenburg (Hampshire, Ill.) followed with a double before Zaccanti hit his first career homerun to put the Warriors on top. WLC added another run on a RBI single from Dominick. IIT trimmed the lead to 7-6 on an RBI in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning when senior Josh Enevold (Jackson, Wis.) was hit by a pitch and Dominick walked to place two runners on base. Junior Carter Raabe (Mukwonago, Wis.) recorded an opposite-field single to right field, scoring both runners on an Illinois Tech error.
  • Dominick paced the offense with three hits, including a homerun, double, and four RBI. Orcutt added a pair of hits and a homerun, while Schulenburg recorded two doubles in the opener.
  • Junior Blake Bontrager (Wellman, Iowa) recorded the win on the mound in 1.0 inning of relief work. Senior Diego Solares (Huntley, Ill.) and junior Glavine Matthes (Appleton, Wis.) each threw 2.0 scoreless innings to close out the game for the Green and White.

  • Dominick got the Warriors on the board first in the nightcap with his second homerun of the day. WLC added another run when Raabe scored on a wild pitch, but the Scarlet Hawks limited the damage by stranding the bases loaded with a pair of strikeouts. IIT added a pair of homeruns in the first three batters of the game to knot the score at 2-2 after the first inning but also left the bases loaded.
  • After a scoreless second, junior Danny Cain (Jackson, Wis.) singled to score Schulenburg who had doubled before him. Cain later scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 4-2.
  • A leadoff homerun and a RBI brought Illinois Tech back into a tie game at 4-4 in the fourth inning. The Scarlet Hawks regained the lead an inning later on a wild pitch and scored for the third consecutive inning with a leadoff home run in the sixth to lead 6-4.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran regained the lead after scoring three runs on four hits in the seventh inning. Enevold started the rally with a double and scored immediately on a RBI single from Dominick. After a single from Raabe, senior Nick Poblocki (Bartlett, Ill.) brought home both runners with a double.
  • Dominick recorded his third RBI of the game in the eighth to extend the lead to 8-6.
  • With two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the ninth, Enevold provided insurance runs for the Green and White with a two-run double to plate freshman Tyler Danko (Milwaukee, Wis.) and junior Joseph Cook (Marshall, Wis.).
  • The Warriors recorded 15 total hits, six of which were extra-base hits. Dominick recorded four hits and three RBI in the nightcap, while Raabe, Poblocki, and Schulenburg each added two hits apiece.
  • Sophomore Hunter Martin (Whitewater, Wis.) worked around four walks to complete 2.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn the win. Solares and Matthes added scoreless frames as WLC's bullpen held IIT scoreless over the final three innings.
