MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin
Lutheran College baseball team fell victim to a couple of big
innings in its 13-2 non-conference loss to Wisconsin-Milwaukee on
Wednesday afternoon at Henry Aaron Field.
The Warriors held the Panthers scoreless in the first two
innings as the scoreboard read 0-0 going into the bottom of the
third. In that frame, UWM plated a pair of unearned runs to take a
2-0 lead after three complete. Luke Meeteer and Jonathan Capasso
recorded RBIs in the two-run inning.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee would plate another run in the bottom of the
fourth before Wisconsin Lutheran responded with its first run of
the game in the top of the fifth inning. It was Taylor Meyer
(Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) who singled in Garrick Day (Elk Mound,
Wis./Elk Mound) to bring the Warriors within two runs at 3-1.
The Panthers answered in the bottom of the fifth as they rallied
for four runs to take a 7-1 lead after five innings. Sam Koenig led
off the inning with a triple and Capasso singled him home to start
the Milwaukee rally. Paul Hoenecke then doubled in Capasso and Mark
Strey added an RBI double of his own in the four-run fifth.
After WLC held the Panthers scoreless in the sixth, UWM went to
work again in the seventh for five more runs to take a commanding
12-1 lead. Nick Lingvay and Ryan Solberge drove in runs in the
seventh for UWM as four of the Panthers' five runs in the frame
were unearned.
Milwaukee scored one more in the eighth before WLC responded with a
run of its own in the ninth to make the final count 13-2 in favor
of the host Panthers. Brandon Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine
Lutheran) started the inning with a single and later scored on a
Connor Vredeveld (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) RBI
groundout.
The Warriors finished with eight hits on the afternoon, while the
Panthers had 11. Doug Martin (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine
Lutheran) went 1-for-1 for WLC, while Meyer, David Sell, (Manawa,
Wis./Manawa), Cody Nevils (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton), Brett
Youngbeck (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) and Joey Hodkiewicz
(Burlington, Wis./Burlington) each finished 1-for-2.
Milwaukee was led by Jim Lundstrom who batted 2-for-5 while driving
in a game-best three runs. Koenig added a 2-for-4 performance for
UWM while scoring two runs.
Alex Erdman picked up the win for Wisconsin-Milwaukee (12-17) as
the junior right-hander pitched one and a third innings of relief
allowing two hits and striking out one. Freshman Sam Mattheis
(Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) took the loss as he allowed three earned
runs in four and a third innings pitched. Senior Steve Gustafson
(West Bend, Wis./Luther Preparatory) pitched a scoreless inning in
relief as he allowed no hits and struck out one. Seven of UWM's 13
runs were unearned in the contest.
Wisconsin Lutheran (6-18, 4-4 NAC) will return to the diamond on
Saturday for a pair of Northern Athletics Conference games against
Lakeland (13-10, 3-5 NAC). First pitch between the Warriors and
Muskies is slated for 12 p.m. at Muskie Field in Sheboygan,
Wis.
