ST. PAUL, Minn. - Northwestern College junior
quarterback Zach Tarter threw four first half touchdowns en route
to leading the Eagles to a 43-7 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran
College on Saturday at Reynolds Field in the 2008 season opener for
both teams.
Wisconsin Lutheran struggled to find any kind of offensive
rhythm in the first half, falling behind 16-0 after one quarter of
play. Northwestern added 17 second quarter points, scoring on all
six of its first half possessions. The Warriors punted four times
and fumbled on another on five of six possessions in the first
half.
WLC's defense stiffened in the third quarter, holding
Northwestern to just a field goal and limited offensive yardage.
The Warriors scored their only touchdown of the game with 12:13
left in the fourth quarter when Josh McCormick (Fond du Lac,
Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) found Dominique Johnson (Milwaukee,
Wis./Vincent) for a 19-yard strike in the back left corner of the
end zone.
The Eagles, the defending Upper Midwest Athletic Conference
champions, answered with a 64-yard touchdown run on the first play
of their next possession for their final score of the game.
Johnson caught three passes for 27 yards and a touchdown.
McCormick completed 14 of 20 passes for 94 yards. The Warriors were
able to manage only 36 yards rushing on 33 carries.
Northwestern, which was 4-for-6 on third down conversions in the
first half, was held to 0-for-4 in the second half. The Eagles
totaled 461 yards of total offense, compared to 147 offensive yards
for the Warriors.
Colin Makepeace (Cape Canaveral, Fla./Cocoa Beach) led the WLC
defense with a game-high 7.5 tackles, a tackle for a loss and a
pass break-up.
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-1) will host Mayville State University
(N.D.) in its 2008 home opener next Saturday at Raabe Stadium in a
12 p.m. kickoff.
