MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin Lutheran College put
forth a dominating effort in its final game of the 2009 season,
running away with a 49-6 victory over Maranatha Baptist Bible
College on Senior Day at Raabe Stadium Saturday.
The Warriors wasted no time finding the scoreboard as they
grabbed a 7-0 lead on their first possession. Junior running back
Larry Hairl (Chicago, Ill./Clemente), who also broke open a 31-yard
run on the drive, took a snap from the wildcat formation and hit
tight end Wyatt Tramburg (Fall River, Wis./Fall River) in the end
zone from seven yards away.
Late in the first quarter, WLC took advantage of great field
position after its defense forced the Crusaders to punt from deep
within their own end zone. Wisconsin Lutheran ran four straight
times with sophomore running back Jesse Muldrow (Milwaukee,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran), with the last carry resulting in a
Warriors touchdown and a 14-0 first-quarter advantage.
The Warriors cashed in their longest drive of the game, nine
plays in 4:01, near the end of the second half when freshman
quarterback Zach Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) tossed a ball
up to Dominique Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Vincent), who caught his
team record 10th touchdown of the season. Johnson passes former
Warriors wide receiver Paul Nelson who caught nine touchdown passes
in 2001. Wisconsin Lutheran took a 21-0 lead into the second
half.
After a 41-yard kickoff return by Rob Kohlhaus to begin the
third quarter, Maranatha earned its only points of the game on a
Rob Dupre seven-yard touchdown pass to Timothy Manion. The
extra-point attempt was blocked.
Hairl and the Warriors offense struck again on their very next
possession to make it 28-6. Wisconsin Lutheran stuck to its
run-oriented game plan and ran five straight times with Hairl,
including an impressive 32-yard effort, to reach the end
zone.
On the ensuing drive, Shaw took advantage of what seemed to be a
confused Crusaders secondary. The freshman hit a wide-open senior
wide receiver Ryan Adamovich (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna) who ran 55
yards for the score in his final game for the forest green and
white.
The Warriors defense made its presence known on the scoreboard
late in the third quarter when junior linebacker Brad Marshall
(Cudahy, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) picked off a pass from Crusaders
quarterback Andrew Green and returned it 55 yards for the
touchdown. WLC held a commanding 42-6 lead heading into the fourth
quarter.
Wisconsin Lutheran capped off its scoring early in the fourth
quarter, as Hairl and Muldrow continued their success on the
ground. Muldrow would finish the drive, scoring his second
touchdown of the game and fifth of the season.
Muldrow finished with 139 yards rushing and two touchdowns,
while Hairl finished with 136 yards and a touchdown. Shaw managed
the game effectively, completing six of 12 passing attempts for 111
yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Johnson, Adamovich and
Tramburg each caught touchdown passes.
The defense allowed only 144 yards and created seven turnovers.
Wisconsin Lutheran's all-time interception leaders, junior Darnell
Williams (Campbellsport, Wis./Campbellsport), had three of the
Warriors' five interceptions on the day.
Junior linebacker Josh McCormick (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago
Lutheran) led the defense with eight tackles and a forced fumble.
Freshman defensive back Jason Kramer (Oconomowoc, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) also had a solid day, recording seven tackles, an
interception, and a sack. Nate Rosenberg (Hortonville, Wis./Fox
Valley Lutheran) and Shaun Stunnard (Merton, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) recorded six tackles apiece.
Seniors Adamovich, Johnson, Justin Cromas (Greenfield,
Wis./Greenfield), Erik Ethun (Rock Springs, Wis./Baraboo), Cody
Harms (Blair, Wis./Blair-Taylor), Heikki Luoma (Helsinki,
Finland/English School of Helsinki) and Ben Proeber (Janesville,
Wis./Lakeside Lutheran), who suited up in forest green and white
for the final time in their careers, were honored during a pregame
ceremony.
Wisconsin Lutheran, which finishes its 2009 season 5-5 overall
and 4-3 in the Northern Athletics Conference, ties its best season
finish which was last set in 2003.
