WATERTOWN, Wis. - Wisconsin Lutheran College
scored 28 first-half points on its way to cruising to a 40-7
Northern Athletics Conference-opening win over Maranatha Baptist
Bible College Saturday afternoon at Maranatha Field.
Wisconsin Lutheran found the endzone four times on its first six
possessions to build a 28-0 halftime lead. Sophomore quarterback
Zach Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) tied a school-record by
tossing four of his five touchdown passes in the first half.
Sophomore Vince Fraumeni (Palm Bay, Fla./Palm Bay), senior Josh
Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian), junior Matt Lopata (Cudahy,
Wis./Cudahy) and senior defensive linemen Shaun Stannard (Merton,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) were each on the receiving end of Shaw's
first-half TDs.
The Crusaders scored their first points of the game, a Jacob
Herren 15-yard reception, on their first possession of the third
quarter after intercepting a Shaw pass. The Warriors notched their
first second-half score with 10:39 left in the third quarter on a
14-yard scamper from senior running back Larry Hairl (Chicago,
Ill./Clemente) after a MBBC fumbled punt return.
WLC reached the endzone for the final time in the game with 3:21
remaining on the third-quarter clock. Shaw found Lopata from 54
yards away for his second score of the game to cap-off an 11-play
90-yard drive. The fourth quarter went scoreless as neither scored
on their combined seven possessions.
Shaw, who was 14-for-25 for 214 yards and five touchdowns, and
Lopata, who caught eight passes for 161 yards and two scores, had
career offensive performances for the Warriors. Jesse Muldrow
(Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) rushed for a game-high 71
yards to pace WLC's rushing attack. The Warriors had 21 first downs
for 398 yards of total offense.
Defensively, senior Nate Rosenberg (Hortonville, Wis./Fox Valley
Lutheran) finished with seven solo tackles to lead WLC. Tom Bodnar
(Racine, Wis./Park) and Aaron McCormick (Fond du Lac,
Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) each intercepted passes, while Kaylan
Gaines (Lake Worth, Fla./American Heritage) and Taylor Montgomery
(Largo, Fla./Largo) recovered fumbles. WLC held Maranatha (0-4, 0-1
NAC) to just 99 yards of total offense.
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-1, 1-0 NAC) returns to the gridiron next
Saturday, October 9 for a showdown with preseason conference
favorite Concordia University Chicago (2-2, 0-1 NAC) in River
Forest, Ill. The Warriors and Cougars are slated to kickoff at 1
p.m. at Concordia Stadium.
