WATERTOWN, Wis. - Wisconsin Lutheran College scored 28 first-half points on its way to cruising to a 40-7 Northern Athletics Conference-opening win over Maranatha Baptist Bible College Saturday afternoon at Maranatha Field.

Wisconsin Lutheran found the endzone four times on its first six possessions to build a 28-0 halftime lead. Sophomore quarterback Zach Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) tied a school-record by tossing four of his five touchdown passes in the first half. Sophomore Vince Fraumeni (Palm Bay, Fla./Palm Bay), senior Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian), junior Matt Lopata (Cudahy, Wis./Cudahy) and senior defensive linemen Shaun Stannard (Merton, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) were each on the receiving end of Shaw's first-half TDs.

The Crusaders scored their first points of the game, a Jacob Herren 15-yard reception, on their first possession of the third quarter after intercepting a Shaw pass. The Warriors notched their first second-half score with 10:39 left in the third quarter on a 14-yard scamper from senior running back Larry Hairl (Chicago, Ill./Clemente) after a MBBC fumbled punt return.

WLC reached the endzone for the final time in the game with 3:21 remaining on the third-quarter clock. Shaw found Lopata from 54 yards away for his second score of the game to cap-off an 11-play 90-yard drive. The fourth quarter went scoreless as neither scored on their combined seven possessions.

Shaw, who was 14-for-25 for 214 yards and five touchdowns, and Lopata, who caught eight passes for 161 yards and two scores, had career offensive performances for the Warriors. Jesse Muldrow (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) rushed for a game-high 71 yards to pace WLC's rushing attack. The Warriors had 21 first downs for 398 yards of total offense.

Defensively, senior Nate Rosenberg (Hortonville, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) finished with seven solo tackles to lead WLC. Tom Bodnar (Racine, Wis./Park) and Aaron McCormick (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) each intercepted passes, while Kaylan Gaines (Lake Worth, Fla./American Heritage) and Taylor Montgomery (Largo, Fla./Largo) recovered fumbles. WLC held Maranatha (0-4, 0-1 NAC) to just 99 yards of total offense.

Wisconsin Lutheran (3-1, 1-0 NAC) returns to the gridiron next Saturday, October 9 for a showdown with preseason conference favorite Concordia University Chicago (2-2, 0-1 NAC) in River Forest, Ill. The Warriors and Cougars are slated to kickoff at 1 p.m. at Concordia Stadium.
