MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin Lutheran College flexed
its muscles Saturday afternoon by scoring a school-record 50 points
as it rolled over the University of Minnesota-Morris 50-21 in its
final non-conference game of 2010 at Raabe Stadium.
On Wisconsin Lutheran's third play from scrimmage, sophomore
quarterback Zach Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) hit junior
Matt Lopata (Cudahy, Wis./Cudahy) for a 40-yard touchdown pass and
an early 7-0 lead, an advantage the Warriors never
relinquished.
Near the end of the first quarter, freshman Donavin Tucker
(Brookfield, Wis./East) scored his first collegiate touchdown on a
13-yard dash to the end zone, putting WLC on top 14-0.
A pair of touchdowns in the second quarter extended the
Warriors' lead to 27-0 at halftime. Shaw threw his second touchdown
pass of the day, this one from 54 yards out, to sophomore Vince
Fraumeni (Palm Bay, Fla./Palm Bay) on WLC's first drive of the
second quarter. After a 28-yard run by Tucker on the teams' next
possession, junior Jesse Muldrow (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) spotted the hosts a 27-point lead with an 8-yard TD run
with 8:27 left on the second-quarter clock.
The Warriors defense was relentless in the first half, forcing
the Cougars to punt seven times and intercepting them once, a
school-record 17th career pick by senior Darnell Williams
(Campbellsport, Wis./Campbellsport).
Minnesota-Morris would not roll over as it came out strong in
the third quarter. The Cougars put seven points on the board with a
three-yard touchdown pass by Derrick Foss to Devon Johnson. Shaw's
offense would respond though, as he found junior Josh Stodola
(Denmark, Wis./Denmark) for a 39-yard scoring strike, his third TD
pass of the day.
The Cougars crept within 18 points on their next possession as
running back Todd Gramenz caught the WLC defense off-guard as he
sprinted down the sideline for a 68-yard touchdown run.
Wisconsin Lutheran pulled away in the final period. A 29-yard
field goal by sophomore Philip Chaltis (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee)
and a team safety gave WLC a 23-point (44-21) cushion. Sophomore
Taylor Pelot (Fond du Lac, Wis./Campbellsport) capped the scoring
with a diving, three-yard TD run with 6:41 remaining.
Shaw led the record-setting offensive performance by completing
12-of-29 passes for 222 yards and three touchdowns. Muldrow gained
74 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown. Tucker rushed nine times
for 61 yards and reached the end zone twice. Stodola led the
receivers with five catches for 83 yards.
Senior Shem Biebert (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./St. Croix
Lutheran) punted eight times and stuck the Cougars inside their
20-yard line three times. His longest punt flew 49 yards.
A stingy defense played a big role in the 50 points that WLC
tallied on the scoreboard. Senior Josh McCormick (Fond du Lac,
Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) led the hard-hitting corpse with 11
tackles and two interceptions. Senior Kaylan Gaines (Lake Worth,
Fla./American Heritage) recorded eight tackles and was responsible
for both of the Warriors' sacks on the day. WLC totaled four
interceptions and allowed only 65 yards on the ground which can be
attributed to the 68-yard TD run by Gramenz.
UM-M (2-1) starting quarterback Derrick Foss was 6-of-19 with a
touchdown pass and two interceptions. Johnson caught four passes
for 45 yards and a TD. Nate Lund led the Morris defense with 12
stops, while James Watkins added an interception.
Wisconsin Lutheran (2-1) will have off for its bye week next
Saturday before returning to the field Saturday, October 2 for its
Northern Athletics Conference opener against Maranatha Baptist
Bible College (0-3) in Watertown, Wis. Kickoff is scheduled for 1
p.m. at Maranatha Field.
