MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
football team scored a school-record 61 points and totaled a
school-record 570 yards of offense en route to a 61-0 shutout
victory over Maranatha Baptist Bible College on Homecoming Saturday
afternoon at Raabe Stadium.
Wisconsin Lutheran scored on 10 of its 14 possessions in the
game and had seven different players reach the end zone. The
Warriors set the tone by scoring 17 first-quarter points and then
followed with another 20 in the second quarter for a 37-0 halftime
lead.
After a touchdown early in the third quarter, WLC capped off its
conference-opener by scoring 17 points in the final frame. The
Warriors racked up a school-record 570 yards of total offense (338
pass, 232 rush) and went 10-of-17 on third-down conversions.
Meanwhile, Wisconsin Lutheran's defense allowed just 100 yards of
total offense and forced five turnovers.
Freshman Brett Youngbeck (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer), senior
Matt Lopata (Cudahy, Wis./Cudahy), junior Tyler Schoen (Marion,
Wis./Marion), junior Taylor Pelot (Fond du Lac,
Wis./Campbellsport), senior Kinte Collins (Chicago, Ill./Clemente),
junior Josh Stodola (Denmark, Wis./Denmark) and freshman Michael
Reeves (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) each found the end
zone for the Warriors.
Junior quarterback Zach Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township)
completed 19-of-29 passing attempts for a career-best 286 yards and
three touchdowns, all to three different targets. Stodola caught
seven passes for 112 yards, both career-highs, to lead the
receivers. Senior Jesse Muldrow (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) rushed 13 times for 94 yards for an average of 7.2 yards
per carry, all coming in the first half. The Warriors ran 84
offensive plays, compared to just 52 for the Crusaders.
Schoen led the defensive unit with seven tackles, two interceptions
and two pass break-ups. The Warriors, who shutout an opponent for
the third time in program history, held Maranatha quarterback Phil
Littrell to just 6-for-29 passing.
For the Crusaders (2-2, 0-1 NAC), Josiah Brendemuehl and Ethan
Rosen had a game-high 15 tackles apiece.
Wisconsin Lutheran (2-2, 1-0 NAC) remains home next Saturday,
October 8 to host Concordia University Chicago (1-2, 0-1 NAC) in a
1 p.m. kickoff at Raabe Stadium. The Cougars dropped a 43-21
conference-opening decision to Benedictine University on
Saturday.
