MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
women's soccer team recorded its first victory of the 2011 season
Tuesday night with an 11-1 rout over Rockford College at Warrior
Field.
Sophomore Maggie Smith (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) led the Warriors
attack as she tallied five goals and an assist, finishing with a
game-high 11 points.
It was Smith who struck first at the 2:25 mark giving WLC an
early 1-0 edge. Smith then found the back of the net again at 9:27
into play, putting the Warriors up by two.
Freshman Laura Kent (Iron Mountain, Mich./Iron Mountain) notched
her first career collegiate goal at the 32:41 mark before Smith
recorded her third goal of the half six minutes later off a
freshman Sarah Kolander (Brookfield, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran)
assist for a 4-0 advantage. A Rockford goal with just four seconds
left in the opening half made the score 4-1 entering
intermission.
The Warriors then scored five times in the first 6:31 of the
second half to put away the Regents, led by three from sophomore
Niki DiSalvo (Waterford, Wis./Waterford).
DiSalvo scored 1:40 into the second half when she connected off a
pass from sophomore Cari Westover (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) to put
the Warriors up four. She then struck 2:18 later, this time off
another Kolander assist for a 6-1 lead.
Kent scored her second goal of the night less than a minute
later on assists from DiSalvo and Smith. Smith's fourth goal came
at the 50:05 mark off a pass from Westover. DiSalvo capped off the
impressive 6:31 span with her third goal of the evening and then
recorded her fourth score at the 78:29 mark. Smith then tallied her
career-high fifth goal with 22 seconds remaining for the 11-1
margin.
Smith led the team with 11 points and DiSalvo finished with
nine, while Kent added six points to lead the Warriors charge.
Westover and Kolander each finished with two assists.
Freshman Sarah Luebke (Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran)
notched her first career collegiate win at keeper as she recorded
six saves. Wisconsin Lutheran out-shot Rockford, 28-8.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-10, 1-5 NAC) travels outside of conference
play on Thursday when it faces North Park University (4-5-1) in
Chicago, Ill. Game time at the Holmgren Athletic Complex is set for
7 p.m.
