MORRIS, Minn. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
football team (1-2) established new school records for total
offensive yards and net yards rushing on Saturday on its way to a
42-20 non-conference finale win over the University of
Minnesota-Morris (2-1) at Big Cat Stadium.
Wisconsin Lutheran racked up a school-record 569 yards of total
offense, including a school-record 363 rushing yards on its way to
collecting a comfortable win over the host Cougars. Running backs
Jesse Muldrow (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran), Donavin Tucker
(Brookfield, Wis./East) and Taylor Pelot (Fond du Lac,
Wis./Campbellsport) ran for over 100 yards each.
The Warriors started fast and set the tone early on their first
offensive play from scrimmage when Muldrow dashed 66 yards for a
touchdown. WLC followed with two other first quarter scores on a
41-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Zach Shaw (Gurnee,
Ill./Warren Township) to tight end Kinte Collins (Chicago,
Ill./Clemente). Muldrow added a nine-yard TD run with 2:23 left in
the quarter for the 21-0 lead.
WLC extended its lead to a game-high 35 points in the second
quarter on a Tucker six-yard touchdown scamper and another
touchdown grab by Collins, this one from 28 yards away. The Cougars
scored their first points of the game with 3:43 left before
halftime. The Warriors went into the break with a comfortable 35-7
lead.
Wisconsin Lutheran scored its final points of the game on its
first possession of the second half. A one-yard touchdown sneak by
Shaw set WLC up with a 42-7 lead. The Warriors defense, which broke
up 10 passes and held three Morris quarterbacks to just 11-for-33
passing, held the Cougars scoreless in the third. UM-M's last two
scores came at the 9:33 and :55 marks of the fourth quarter.
Muldrow averaged an incredible 15.3 yards per carry as he rushed
for 138 yards on just nine attempts. Tucker followed with 110 yards
on the ground, while Pelot posted 108 yards. This was the first
time in program history that the team had three different running
backs surpass the 100-yard mark on the ground in a single game.
Shaw was an effective 13-for-22 for 192 yards and two
touchdowns. He completed passes to six different receivers. Matt
Lopata (Cudahy, Wis./Cudahy) and Josh Stodola (Denmark,
Wis./Denmark) each caught four passes for 53 and 37 yards,
respectively. WLC averaged 8.4 yards per play on its way to
reaching school-record totals.
Defensively, Jason Kramer (Oconomowoc, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran)
and Eric Zeitler (Waukesha, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) recorded a
team-best nine tackles each. Zeitler also recovered a fumble and
broke-up three passes.
Offensively for Minnesota-Morris, running Todd Gramenz rushed
for 125 yards and Shannon Cleare-Glover totaled nine tackles to
guide the hosts defensively.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-2), which has off for its bye next
weekend, returns home October 1 to host Maranatha Baptist Bible
College (2-1) for its annual Homecoming game and conference opener.
