Warriors take another step toward NAC Championship

MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's tennis team defeated NAC-leading Concordia University Wisconsin late Tuesday night 8-1 at the Paley Tennis Center and took a big step toward claiming a share of their first conference championship since 2004.

With the win, WLC improved to 9-1 in NAC play, just one-half game behind the Falcons and Edgewood College, who both finished 10-1 in conference play.

The Warriors took all three doubles matches, led by the #1 team of Kaitlyn Strehlow (Hales Corners, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and Stephanie Gengler (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) who defeated Concordia's top tandem, 8-6.

Both of the Warriors #2 and #3 doubles teams won via tiebreaker. Kathryn Hendee (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) and Lindsay Gauger (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) took the #2 matchup, while Alyssa Strangstalien (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) and Emily Pearson (Prairie du Sac, Wis./Luther Preparatory) won #3, both by 9-8 scores.

Strehlow continued her strong play at #1 singles for the Warriors, improving to 8-0 in NAC play, with a 6-1, 6-3 win. Hendee battled back for a win at #2 after dropping her opening set 4-6 to win the final two sets, 6-4, 10-8.

CUW took the #3 singles match as Pearson suffered her first individual loss this season in conference play. Wisconsin Lutheran responded with wins at #4 through #6 starting with a Strangstalien 6-3, 6-3 victory at #4. Gengler also won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 at #5, while Gauger needed all three sets to win #6, 6-4, 1-6, 10-6.

Wisconsin Lutheran (10-4, 9-1 NAC) concludes its NAC regular season schedule on Saturday when it hosts Alverno College (4-8, 4-5 NAC) at 10 a.m. at the Princeton Club. The Warriors would clinch of share of their first conference championship since 2004 with a victory over the Inferno.
