NEW BERLIN, Wis. -
The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's tennis team picked up its
first win of the season with a 7-2 victory over Rockford on
Saturday at the Princeton Club. WLC fell in its opening match of
the day by a 7-2 decision against Aurora.
In the Rockford triumph, the Warriors picked up wins in four
singles matches and swept doubles play to gain their first victory
in nearly two years. Freshman Lee Johnson (Hales Corners,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) continued his strong play in the Northern
Athletics Conference as he defeated Mladen Ubiparipovic, 6-1, 6-1
at #1 singles.
Wisconsin Lutheran also claimed victories at #2, #3 and #5 singles
to go 4-2 in singles matches versus the Regents (0-6, 0-5 NAC). At
#2, it was Luke Schroeder (Waukesha, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) who
picked up a straight sets victory over Alex Kadamian, 6-3, 6-1. #3
singles saw David Parez (Milwaukee, Wis./Thomas More) roll to a
6-2, 6-1 win and the Warriors also notched a win at #6 singles from
Jeremy Vanderhyde (Aurora, Colo./Rocky Mountain Lutheran), 6-1,
6-4.
In doubles play, Wisconsin Lutheran took all three matches led by a
#1 doubles win from Johnson and Matthew Rocque (Green Bay, Wis./Bay
Port) as the two downed Rockford's #1 doubles team of Ubiparipovic
and Kadamian, 8-2. Schroeder and Parez picked up an 8-5 win at #2
doubles, while Matt Pautz (Two Rivers, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran) and
Aaron Roesler (Watertown, Wis./Luther Preparatory) netted a victory
at #3 doubles, 8-0.
In the Warriors' first dual match of the day, they fell to Aurora
(3-7, 3-2 NAC) 7-2 as Wisconsin Lutheran was able to only pick up a
pair of singles wins. Johnson was one of the two victors for WLC in
the opening match as he remained perfect at 6-0 in NAC play with
his 6-1, 6-4 #1 singles victory over reigning NAC Student-Athlete
of the Week Ricky Hernandez.
Roesler gained the Warriors other victory in the opening match as
he netted a #6 singles victory over the Spartans Brian Koski.
Roesler was in control throughout his match as he picked up the win
in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-6, 1-5 NAC) will return to the courts on
Tuesday when it concludes a four-match homestand against Lakeland
(0-3, 0-3 NAC). The Warriors and Muskies will begin play at 4 p.m.
at the Princeton Club in New Berlin, Wis.
