Warriors net second conference win over Muskies

The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's tennis team set a school record for most wins in a season with its 5-4 victory over Lakeland in a Northern Athletics Conference dual match on Friday at the Princeton Club.

The win was the second of the season for the Warriors as they reached that plateau for the first time since the program began in 2008.

The Warriors and Muskies split the six singles matches on Friday as WLC picked up wins at #1, #2 and #5 singles. Freshman Lee Johnson (Hales Corners, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) improved his conference record to 8-1 as he rolled past Paul Elzinga of LC, 6-0, 6-0.

Luke Schroeder (Waukesha, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) tallied a win at #2 singles for Wisconsin Lutheran, defeating Yu Sasaski, 6-1, 7-6. Also winning his singles match for WLC was freshman Jeremy Vanderhyde (Aurora, Colo./Rocky Mountain Lutheran), who picked up a win at #5 singles over Kodai Miyamoto, 6-2, 6-1.

Doubles play was where Wisconsin Lutheran won the match as the Warriors took two of three matches, winning at #1 and #2. The team of Johnson and Matthew Rocque (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) won its match at #1 doubles as they downed Elzinga and Sasaki, 8-2. Also gaining a victory in doubles play was the #2 team of Schroeder and David Parez (Milwaukee, Wis./Thomas More), who defeated Kazuya Hosokawa and Hidenori Sawada, 8-3.

The dual match was the last of the season for Wisconsin Lutheran, which finished the season at 2-8 overall and 2-7 in conference play. Some of the Warriors will compete in the NAC Individual Tournament next Saturday and Sunday, May 5-6, at the Sports Core in Kohler, Wis.
