RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College men's tennis team played visitor to two conference
opponents on Saturday. The Warriors fell in both of their
conference duals, 6-3 against Dominican and 7-2 versus Concordia
Chicago.
The Warriors battled through singles competition against
Dominican, winning two matches and taking two of their four losses
into three sets. In #1 singles action, freshman Lee Johnson (Hales
Corners, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) got behind early to Dominican's
Kevin Amarantos, but finished strong by winning 6-7, 6-1, 6-2.
Wisconsin Lutheran freshman Jeremy Vanderhyde (Aurora, Colo./Rocky
Mountain Lutheran) also came through by winning his match 6-2, 6-3
at #5 singles. Sophomore Matthew Rocque (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port)
gave his #6 opponent all he could handle, but fell 6-4, 6-7,
14-12.
Dominican also took two of three doubles matchups over the
Warriors. The Warriors #3 team of Vanderhyde and Adam Breister
(Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) highlighted doubles play by
defeating their opponents, 8-5.
In the second match of the afternoon, Concordia Chicago proved
to be too much for the Warriors in singles competition as it won
five of six flights. Johnson was the headliner once again as he
defeated the Cougars' Thien Van, 6-1, 6-1.
The Warriors found themselves on the losing side of a 2-1 record
in doubles play against the Cougars. In the #1 doubles match, the
duo of Johnson and Rocque gave Concordia Chicago a scare, but fell
in the end, 8-6. At #3 doubles, Vanderhyde and Breister came
through for the Warriors for the second time on Saturday by
defeating their opponents, 8-6.
The Warriors (0-4, 0-3 NAC) continue conference play on
Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Princeton Club in New Berlin, Wis. WLC
will look for its first win of the season against rival Concordia
Wisconsin (3-9, 0-0 NAC) in its first home match of 2012.
