MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College men's tennis team dropped a pair of non-conference dual
matches Saturday to Cornell and Dubuque at the Small Multi-Sport
Center Arena.
The Warriors began the day by falling victim to a sweep from the
Rams (6-0). Cornell won the three doubles flights by scores of 8-5,
8-1, and 8-0. CC also won all six singles matches, but not before
sophomore Lee Johnson (Hales Corners, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) gave
the Rams' top player a battle as he fell in three sets 6-1, 4-6,
10-7.
In their second dual of the day, the Warriors dropped a close
5-4 decision to the Dubuque Spartans (3-5). The Warriors opened
play by winning two of three doubles matches as the tandems of
Johnson and junior Ryan Sallmann (Waukesha, Wis./West) (8-1) and
freshman Zach Birner (Neenah, Wis./Luther Preparatory) and
sophomore Luke Schroeder (Waukesha, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) (8-5)
won their matches at #1 and #2 doubles, respectively.
Johnson and Birner were also victorious in singles action,
winning at #1 and #3, respectively. Johnson came away with a 6-4,
6-0 victory, while Birner won convincingly 6-1, 6-1. The Warriors
were unable to come away with a win in any of the other
flights.
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-4) returns to the courts March 23 when it
plays a non-conference match at Ripon (0-5). The dual against the
Red Hawks is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. at Larson Courts.
