Warriors Edge Red Hawks For Season's First Win

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's tennis team edged Ripon for a 5-4 non-conference victory Saturday at Center Court Tennis Club in Fond du Lac, Wis.

The Warriors had control in singles play as they won four of six matches against the Red Hawks (1-8). After losing the #1 singles match, junior Ryan Sallmann (Waukesha, Wis./West), freshman Zach Birner (Neenah, Wis./Luther Preparatory), and sophomore Luke Schroeder (Waukesha, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) bounced back and won matches at #2, #3, and #4, respectively for the Warriors. Sallmann, Birner, and Schroeder each won their matches in two sets. Sophomore Adam Breister (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) then edged out RC's Anders Goodwin at #6, 3-6, 6-4, 10-2 to earn the Warriors' fourth victory in singles play.

The Warriors dropped two of three matches to the Red Hawks in doubles play. WLC's lone victory came at #3 doubles as junior Matt Rocque (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) and sophomore Jeremy Vanderhyde (Aurora, Colo./Rocky Mountain Lutheran) defeated Tyler Hopewell and Anders Goodwin, 9-8 (7-2).

Wisconsin Lutheran (1-4) begins conference play next Saturday, March 30 when it hosts Marian (0-0) and Edgewood (1-15) at the Princeton Club in New Berlin, Wis. The match with the Sabres start at 10 a.m., while the dual versus the Eagles follows at 2 p.m.
