NEW BERLIN, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College men's tennis team won a pair of Northern Athletics
Conference dual matches Saturday at the Princeton Club to stand 2-0
in conference play for the first time in its history. WLC defeated
Marian, 9-0, before taking down Edgewood, 7-2.
The Warriors had little trouble in singles play against Marian
(0-2, 0-1 NAC), sweeping all six matches. Lee Johnson (Hales
Corners, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) defeated Rob Ogden 6-1, 6-0 in #1
singles action. Zach Birner (Neenah, Wis./Luther Preparatory)
turned in an impressive 6-0, 6-0 win at #3 singles. Ryan Sallmann
(Waukesha, Wis./West), Luke Schroeder (Waukesha, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran), David Parez (Milwaukee, Wis./Thomas More), and Adam
Breister (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) also were
victorious to round out the singles sweep.
The #1 doubles team of Johnson and Sallmann defeated Ogden and
Andrew Bales, 8-5, to begin doubles play. The tandems of Birner and
Schroeder at #2 and Jeremy Vanderhyde (Aurora, Colo./Rocky Mountain
Lutheran) and Matt Rocque (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) at #3 both won
8-0 to give WLC the 9-0 sweep.
Things continued to go WLC's way in its second match of the
afternoon against Edgewood (2-17, 1-1 NAC), with Johnson and
Sallmann picking up the first two wins in singles play. Schroeder,
Vanderhyde, and Breister also added victories at #4 through #6
singles.
In #1 doubles play, Johnson and Sallmann picked up their second
win of the day. At #3, Vanderhyde and Rocque also won again to put
the final match tally at 7-2.
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-4, 2-0 NAC) travels to Kohler, Wis., next
Thursday, April 4 for its first conference road match of the
season. The dual against Lakeland (0-2, 0-0 NAC) is scheduled for 4
p.m. at the Kohler Sports Core.
