GREENFIELD, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College men's tennis team continued its hot start in conference
play on Saturday, winning a pair of home matches against Dominican
University and Concordia University Chicago at Whitnall High
School. The Warriors' 6-3 win over the Stars and 9-0 sweep over the
Cougars extended their best conference start in school history to
5-0.
In the opening match against Dominican, WLC picked up a pair of
victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, winning 9-8 and 8-2.
At No. 1 singles, Lee Johnson (Hales Corners, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) earned a two-set 6-1, 6-2 win. Zach Birner (Neenah,
Wis./Luther Preparatory), Luke Schroeder (Waukesha, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran), and Jeremy Vanderhyde (Aurora, Colo./Rocky Mountain
Lutheran) all won their singles matches at No. 3 through No. 5 to
clinch the 6-3 match victory.
In the second match of the afternoon against Concordia Chicago,
the top doubles duo of Johnson and Ryan Sallmann (Waukesha,
Wis./West) got things started with an 8-3 win. The teams of Birner
and Schroeder at No. 2 and Vanderhyde and Matt Rocque (Green Bay,
Wis./Bay Port) at No. 3 also earned victories to sweep the doubles
portion of the contest.
The Warriors could not be stopped, as Johnson, Sallmann, Birner,
Schroeder, Vanderhyde, and Adam Breister (Fond du Lac,
Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) all won their singles matches to complete
the 9-0 sweep of the Cougars.
Wisconsin Lutheran (6-5, 5-0 NAC) plays its final regular season
home match tomorrow afternoon against MSOE (2-10, 1-1 NAC) at the
Princeton Club in New Berlin, Wis. The NAC dual against the Raiders
is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
