NEW BERLIN, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's tennis team was clipped by Carroll, 5-4, Friday night in a non-conference dual match at Moorland Park Tennis Center.
Lee Johnson (Hales Corners, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and Zach Birner (Neenah, Wis./Luther Preparatory) opened doubles competition with a close 9-8 win over Carroll's Matthew Michael and Eric Schneider. The Pioneers (1-3) returned the favor with a 9-8 win of their own over WLC's Ryan Sallmann (Waukesha, Wis./West) and Derek Sallmann (Waukesha, Wis./West). The Warriors dropped the No. 3 match, 8-3.
In singles action, Johnson picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1 over Michael. Ryan Sallmann followed at No. 2 with 6-1, 4-6, 10-5 triumph over Nick Schultz. The Warriors' final win came at No. 6 where Jeremy Vanderhyde (Aurora, Colo./Rocky Mountain Lutheran) won 7-5, 6-1 against Johnny Nguyen. Derek Sallmann (No. 3), Birner (No. 4), and Adam Breister (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) (No. 5) all came up on the short end in their respective singles matches, 6-3, 7-5; 6-3, 6-3; 6-3, 7-6.
The Warriors (0-2) return to the courts tomorrow with another non-conference road match against Ripon (1-3) at 3 p.m. at Center Court Tennis Club in Fond du Lac.
