RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's tennis team picked up a pair of Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference road wins Saturday, defeating Dominican 8-1 before besting Concordia Chicago by an identical 8-1 score.
The Warriors encountered little resistance in doubles competition against the Stars (2-4, 2-8 NACC) as Lee Johnson (Hales Corners, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and Zach Birner (Neenah, Wis./Luther Preparatory) defeated Kevin Amarantos and Krystian Drozdz 8-0 at No. 1. The duo of Ryan Sallmann (Waukesha, Wis./West) and Derek Sallmann (Waukesha, Wis./West) won their No. 2 doubles match 8-1. Dominican defaulted the No. 3 doubles match.
Amarantos was the lone victor for Dominican, edging out Johnson 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Ryan Sallmann cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, followed by Birner's 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 3. At No. 4 singles, Derek Sallmann breezed by Chandler Allen 6-0, 6-0, and Adam Breister (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) earned a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles. David Parez (Milwaukee, Wis./Thomas More) won by default in his No. 6 singles match.
In the afternoon match against Concordia Chicago (3-4, 3-4 NACC), Johnson and Birner won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Ryan Sallmann and Derek Sallmann were victorious 8-2 at No. 2 doubles to hand the Warriors the first two doubles wins. CUC won its only match of the day at No. 3 doubles as Zach Eddins and Chris Auger defeated Breister and Austin Wagenknecht (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza) 8-5.
WLC swept its way through singles play, started off by Johnson's 6-2, 6-0 win over Ariel Manjarrez at No. 1. Ryan Sallmann defeated Clinton Bienz 6-2, 6-4 in No. 2 singles. Birner and Derek Sallmann both had easy wins, winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 and 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4, respectively. Breister and Wagenknecht both battled their way to wins, as Breister won at No. 5 singles 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 and Wagenknecht completed the sweep with a 2-6, 9-7, 10-7 win at No. 6.
The second-place Warriors (8-8, 5-1 NACC) take on conference rival Concordia Wisconsin (9-12, 4-2 NACC) Wednesday at the Princeton Club in New Berlin beginning at 4 p.m.
