Vikings Sneak Past Warriors, 5-4

APPLETON, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's tennis team dropped its fourth heartbreaking 5-4 decision of the season Friday night, this time against non-conference opponent Lawrence at Fox Cities Racquet Club.

The Warriors started strong in doubles play, winning two of the three flights. Lee Johnson (Hales Corners, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and Zach Birner (Neenah, Wis./Luther Preparatory) won 8-4 at No. 1 and Jeremy Vanderhyde (Aurora, Colo./Rocky Mountain Lutheran) and Adam Breister (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) claimed an 8-6 victory at No. 3. Ryan Sallmann (Waukesha, Wis./West) and Derek Sallmann (Waukesha, Wis./West) dropped a close 8-6 decision at No. 2.

The Vikings controlled most of the singles competition, however, as they won four of six flights. Johnson improved his record to 9-2 on the season at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Brian DeCorte and Derek Sallmann ousted Mitch Kasprzyk, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. LU (3-9) was victorious in its matches at No. 2, No. 3, No. 5, and No. 6 singles.
