Day's Game Two Gem Earns Split With Stars

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE - Garrick Day (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound) improved to 5-0 on the mound this season with a dominant pitching performance in game two on his Senior Day to help the Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team split a doubleheader with Dominican Friday at Neumann Family Fields. The Warriors (17-19, 8-12 NACC) dropped game one 7-5, ending their hopes of returning to the NACC Tournament, before eeking out a 4-3 victory in game two.

Day held the Stars (21-16, 10-10 NACC) to three runs (one earned) on six hits, walked one, and struck out four in a complete game effort. Dominican took the early lead on an unearned run in the first inning, but the Warriors offense responded to provide all of the run support Day would need in the first two innings.

Brett Youngbeck (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) and Matt Wick (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) knocked back-to-back RBI singles and Zack Skog (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) tacked on a sacrifice fly in the first to give WLC a 3-1 lead. Aaron Roeseler (Watertown, Wis./Luther Preparatory) hit a run-scoring single to left-center in the second to extend the lead to 4-1.

The final runs of the game scored in the top of the fourth, when Lucas McKinney hit a sacrifice fly and Joe Lyons scored on a passed ball to pull the Stars to within 4-3. Day shut down Dominican after the fourth, as he allowed just one hit and faced the minimum over the final five frames.

Roeseler, Youngbeck, and Wick -- WLC's three, four, and five hitters, respectively -- each went 2-for-4 with an RBI in game two.

Cody Mueller (1-4) took the loss for the Stars after allowing all four Warriors runs in 1.2 innings. Quinlan Milne-Rojek was 2-for-4 for Dominican.

A pair of WLC errors helped Dominican jump out to a first-inning lead in game one. Cody Schuster and Joe Lyons each supplied RBI singles, and a third run scored on an error to put the Stars in front 3-0. Schuster drilled a run-scoring double in the fourth and Tim Varallo delivered a two-run single in the fifth to stretch the lead to 6-0.

The Warriors rallied in the sixth, cutting the lead in half with three runs on four hits. Wick smacked an RBI single, Skog followed with a run-scoring double, and Brandon Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) hit a sacrfice fly in the inning.

The Stars added a run in the eighth on Joe Krasny's RBI single to make it 7-3. WLC answered in the bottom of the inning on back-to-back RBI doubles by Josiah Boucher (Menasha, Wis./Menasha) and Jake Klemme (Plymouth, Wis./Plymouth) to trim the deficit to 7-5.

Jaime Paumen (Glencoe, Minn./Silver-Lake) (2-4) was charged with six runs (four earned) in 5.0 innings for the loss. Roeseler, Skog, and Youngbeck recorded two hits apiece for the Warriors.

Mitch McCaffery (5-4) threw a complete game in the victory, giving up five runs (three earned) on 12 hits. Lyons was 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored and Schuster was 3-for-5 with two RBI.

The day marked the final home games in the careers of seniors Day, Jake Meyer (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton), Taylor Meyer (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton), and Alex Raver (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett).

Wisconsin Lutheran will wrap up its season with a pair of road non-conference games next week, starting with a 6 p.m. meeting with Carroll (11-18) Monday at 6 p.m.
