NEW BERLIN, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's tennis team was handed a pair of 9-0 defeats Saturday against the racquets of Saint Mary's (Minn.) and Carroll in non-conference action.
The Cardinals (6-2) took all nine matches from the Warriors in their afternoon dual at Lake Country Racquet & Athletic Club. WLC was unable to earn no more than one game in doubles action. Wisconsin Lutheran's closest contested match of the day came at No. 1 singles where Lee Johnson (Hales Corners, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) was defeated 6-1, 6-4 by SMU's Tim Wolford. It was Johnson's first singles loss of the season. Saint Mary's managed to win all singles matches in straight sets.
The Warriors battled Carroll in their final match of the evening at Moorland Park Tennis Center. The host Pioneers (2-4) also came away with a 9-0 victory over WLC. In doubles action, Johnson and Zach Birner (Neenah, Wis./Luther Preparatory) dropped a tough 8-4 decision at No. 1 to Jack Michael and Peter Jaeger. Adam Breister (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) and Ben Wordell (Lake Mills, Wis./Christian Academy Japan) also fell 8-4 at No. 3. Singles play saw CU take all flights in straight sets as WLC's Birner took three games at No. 2 but fell 6-0, 6-3 and Austin Wagenknecht (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza) dropped a 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5.
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-4) is back in action next Friday when it hosts Lawrence (2-1) at 7 p.m. in non-conference action at Moorland Park Tennis Center.
