NEW BERLIN, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's tennis team opened its 2015 season Saturday by hosting UW-La Crosse and Carleton in a pair of non-conference dual matches indoors at Moorland Park Tennis Center. The Warriors fell to the Eagles and Knights by identical 8-1 scores.
In the morning's first match against the Eagles, Lee Johnson (Hales Corners, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and Derek Sallmann (Waukesha, Wis./West) were defeated at No. 1 doubles, 8-3, as UWL (2-1) swept through doubles competition. Johnson notched the Warriors' only win at No. 1 singles when he defeated Peter Stadum 6-3, 6-4. Sallmann picked up WLC's only other set win of singles play at No. 2 as La Crosse claimed three 6-0, 6-0 victories.
Johnson and Sallmann partnered again in their second match of the day at No. 1 doubles and dropped an 8-2 decision to the Knights' top doubles team. Following Carleton's doubles sweep, Johnson again gave the Warriors at boost at No. 1 singles after he knocked off Andrew Hwang 7-6 (10-8), 6-4. Austin Wagenknecht (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza) collected a set win at No. 4 singles, but Carleton (5-0) swept three flights by 6-0, 6-0 scores to defeat the Warriors.
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-2) returns to action two weeks from today when it faces Saint Mary's (1-2) and UW-Eau Claire (0-0) in two more non-conference matches.
