BROOKFIELD, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's tennis team concluded its regular season schedule after winning its third straight match Saturday by defeating Dominican (9-0) and Concordia Chicago (8-1) at Elite Sports Club. With the wins, the Warriors have advanced to the NACC Tournament for the third straight season.
The Warriors opened their first match against the Stars (5-9, 4-4 NACC) by winning all three doubles matches by identical 8-4 scores. Lee Johnson (Hales Corners, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and Zach Birner (Neenah, Wis./Luther Preparatory) teamed at No. 1, Derek Sallmann (Waukesha, Wis./West) and Jeremy Vanderhyde (Aurora, Colo./Rocky Mountain Lutheran) partnered at No. 2, and Adam Breister (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) and Ben Wordell (Lake Mills, Wis./Christian Academy Japan) were the tandem at No. 3.
WLC also swept through singles play as Johnson (6-0, 6-4), Birner (6-0, 6-1), Sallmann (6-4, 6-3), Breister (3-6, 6-1, 6-4), Vanderhyde (5-7, 6-4, 10-8), and Wordell (2-6, 6-2, 12-10) were all victorious at No. 1 through No. 6 singles.
Wisconsin Lutheran once again swept through doubles play against the Cougars (1-8, 1-7 NACC) in their second match of the day as the same three doubles teams won for the Warriors by finals of 8-2, 8-4, and 8-1, respectively.
Johnson completed his undefeated NACC season with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 1. Birner (6-4, 6-2), Sallmann (6-4, 6-4), Breister (4-6, 6-2, 6-0), and Vanderhyde (6-1, 6-0) were again winners in their respective matches at No. 2 through No. 5 singles. CUC won its only match of the day at No. 6 singles in three sets.
WLC (5-10, 4-4 NACC) will open NACC Tournament First Round play Monday. Its opponent, location, and time will be announced as soon as they becomes available.
