Carroll Tops Wisconsin Lutheran In Season Opener

NEW BERLIN, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's tennis team opened its 2016 season on Sunday with a 7-2 non-conference loss to Carroll at Moorland Park Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Pioneers opened the match with a sweep of doubles play. The Warriors came close at No. 2 as the duo of Cedric Guichard (Plantation, Fla./American Heritage) and Ben Wordell (Lake Mills, Wis./Christian Academy Japan) came up just short, 8-6.
• Wisconsin Lutheran claimed a pair of three-set wins during singles play. At No. 2, Zach Birner (Neenah, Wis./Luther Preparatory) defeated Carroll's Quentin Lammers in three sets 0-6, 6-3, 10-6. 
• Paul Fitzgerald (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls), who made his debut for WLC on Sunday, also collected a thrilling three-set victory over CU's Noah Stemper at No. 5, 4-6, 7-6, 8-6. 
• The Pioneers won singles matches at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 in straight sets.

• Wisconsin Lutheran (0-1) is back in action next Friday when it travels to Lawrence (3-1) at 7 p.m. for a non-conference match at Fox Cities Racquet Club in Appleton.
