Warriors Cap Busy Weekend With Win Over Sabres

JANESVILLE, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's tennis team capped a busy weekend with four matches in three days on Sunday, falling to defending NACC champion Edgewood 9-0 before bouncing back for a 7-2 win over Marian at Premier Tennis & Fitness.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The defending conference champion Eagles proved worthy of their preseason prediction as they took all nine flights from the Warriors, including all six singles matches in straight sets.
• Wisconsin Lutheran bounced back in its final match of the afternoon against Marian. The Warriors swept through doubles action to take a commanding lead. 
• Derek Sallmann (Waukesha, Wis./West) and Ben Wordell (Lake Mills, Wis./Christian Academy Japan) were victorious 8-2 at No. 1. Zach Birner (Neenah, Wis./Luther Preparatory) and Paul Fitzgerald (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) claimed an 8-1 win at No. 2, and Cedric Guichard (Plantation, Fla./American Heritage) and Ryan Eastman (Brookfield, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) also collected an 8-1 victory at No. 3.
• In singles play, Sallmann (6-0, 6-1), Birner (6-0, 6-1), Fitzgerald (6-1, 6-3), and Eastman (Default) each picked up wins for WLC at No. 1, 2, 4, and 6, respectively, as the Warriors evened their conference mark.

• The Warriors will jump out of conference play for the final time next weekend, playing a 1:30 p.m. match against Bethany Lutheran (4-10) on Sunday in Mankato, Minn.
