Warriors Overcome Heat, Early Deficit To Tame Cougars

Box Score

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's soccer team, powered by goals from seniors Mady Hirsch (Jefferson, Wis.) and Helen Joyce (De Pere, Wis.), defeated the visiting Minnesota-Morris Cougars 2-1 Sunday afternoon in the swealtering heat at Warriors Soccer Field. The victory marked the first time that the Warriors have started a season with consecutive victories since 2013.

THE BASICS

  • Final Score: Wisconsin Lutheran 2, Minnesota-Morris 1
  • Records: Wisconsin Lutheran (2-0-0), Minnesota-Morris (0-1-0)
  • Location: Warriors Soccer Field, Milwaukee, Wis.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cougars struck first in the second minute of the contest when Brooke Lorentz lofted a ball from 15 yards away over the Warriors goalkeeper to put the visitors up 1-0.
  • WLC answered in the 11th minute when Hirsch took a pass from Miriam Carreno (San Antonio, Texas) and struck the ball from 15 yards out, finding the back of the net and tying the contest at 1-1.
  • The Warriors kept the pressure on the rest of the first half, out-shooting UMM 7-4 and registering three corner kicks, but couldn't find the back of the net.
  • The second half was dominated by WLC, as it held possession in the UMM half of the field for a large portion, but the two teams remained deadlocked at 1-1.
  • Joyce gave the Warriors the lead in the 78th minute after she received a pass from Lizzy Bauer (Kewaskum, Wis.) and beat the keeper one-on-one, putting WLC ahead 2-1.
  • Joyce's nifty goal proved to be the game-winner as the Warriors were able to keep the pressure on the Cougars, not allowing a shot from Minnesota-Morris over the final 13 minutes of play.
