WLC Downs Lawrence For Spring Opening Split

APPLETON, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's tennis team picked up its first-ever win over Lawrence on Friday night to salvage a spring season-opening split. The Warriors defeated the Vikings 7-2 after dropping a narrow 5-4 decision to Wartburg earlier in the day. The win was the first for newly appointed head coach Jay Massart

  • The Warriors' No. 1 doubles team of senior Evan Sadowski (New Berlin, Wis.) and freshman Aidan Newberg (Manitowoc, Wis.) earned an 8-3 win. The Knights took the matches at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles by scores of 8-7 (7-3) and 8-5. 
  • WLC collected straight set wins at the first three singles positions, with Sadowski (6-2, 6-1), Newberg (6-0, 6-4), and freshman Asa White (Farmington, N.M.) (6-4, 6-2) winning their respective matches. Wartburg won the last three flights in singles to win the match 5-4.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran swept all three matches from the Vikings to begin doubles play. Sadowski and Newberg were victorious 8-5 at No. 1, White and sophomore Jon Kannenberg (Butler, Wis.) collected an 8-3 win at No. 2, and sophomore Bryce Halvorsen (Fredonia, Wis.) and junior Josh Hennen (Slinger, Wis.) capped doubles play with an 8-7 victory at No. 3.
  • Four players picked up win in singles play for the Green and White, as White (6-3, 6-2), Halvorsen (6-2, 6-4), sophomore Matt Bass (Village of Lakewood, Ill.) (6-0, 6-3), and Hennen (6-2, 6-2) were all winners.

  • The Warriors travel to Mount Vernon, Iowa on Sunday for two more non-conference matches against host Cornell (1-1) and Dubuque (0-1). WLC takes on the Rams at 9 a.m. followed by the Spartans at 12 p.m. inside the Small Sport Center Arena.
