Box Score 2 RIPON, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College picked up its first two wins of the season on Saturday, defeating Ripon and Wartburg by identical 7-2 results at the Willmore Center.
The Warriors (2-7), who returned to action for the first time in eight days, defeated the Red Hawks (0-6) in their opening match of the day by a 7-2 score for their fifth straight win in the series.
WLC held a 2-1 lead through doubles play, as sophomores
Aidan Newberg (Manitowoc, Wis.) and
Asa White (Farmington, N.M.) were 8-5 winners at No. 1. At No. 3, junior
Bryce Halvorsen (Kewaskum, Wis.) and senior
Josh Hennen (Slinger, Wis.) teamed for an 8-3 victory.
Wisconsin Lutheran claimed wins at five of the six singles flights to clinch the match. Newberg netted a three-set win of 6-4, 2-6, 10-6 at No. 1, while White was a 7-6, 6-3 winner at No. 2. Freshman
Zadic Torline (Shawnee, Kan.) (7-6, 6-2), Hennen (6-3, 6-1), and Halvorsen (6-3, 6-1) sealed the match with triumphs at No. 4 through No. 6 singles, respectively.
The Warriors also handed the Knights (2-7) a 7-2 setback in their second contest of the day.Â
WLC collected a pair of wins during doubles competition, as Newberg and White won 8-4 at No. 1 and junior
Jon Kannenberg (Butler, Wis.) and Torline partnered at No. 2 for an 8-1 win.Â
In singles play, Wisconsin Lutheran came out on top in five of six flights. Newberg (6-2, 6-4), White (6-4, 6-3), Kannenberg (6-1, 6-0), Torline (6-2, 6-3), and junior
Matt Bass (Village of Lakewood, Ill.) (6-4, 6-2) also won in straight sets for the Warriors.
WLC travels to Appleton next Saturday for a 6 p.m. non-conference match against Lawrence (1-3) at Fox Cities Racquet Club.Â
